Out to Oshawa - Sunday August 19th

One of my favorite rides is to take the Waterfront Trail out to Oshawa. Most of it is on dedicated bike trails next to the lake, or on quiet residential streets, with some great scenic portions, especially around Ajax and Rouge Hill.

The plan is to ride out to Oshawa from Kennedy subway station (we'll also ge going thru the Eglinton GO station parking lot if you want to meet us there), and ride out as far as the Oshawa GO station (about 65 km), then taking the GO train back into the city.

We'll start this ride from the Kennedy Subway Station, the south parking lot, at 10:30 AM. From there we ride a short way along Eglinton to the SOUTH parking lot of the Eglinton GO station (picking up anyone who wants to, say, drive there), and then get on the Waterfront Trail for the ride out to Oshawa.

The ride will mostly be on trails and quiet streets, there will be two short sections on a medium busy road. The ride can easily be done an a road bike.

Once we get to Oshawa we can take the GO train from there back to the city (the trip is less than an hour back to Eglinton Station, it's about $8), or people can backtrack if we feel like it. We'll be passing GO stations the entire way out if people feel like dropping out. We can have lunch in Pickering, which will be about half-way there.

Feel free to email me about the ride if you have any questions. I'll be checking the weather and I'll send out an advisory in the days beforehand if it looks like the weather might be bad.

My cell is[masked]-7019.

This is a great ride so please try it out!

This was a five-star ride with five-star people. However, in the future, let's not scoff when someone has advice to offer about traversing a hazardous area where people are sometimes injured or killed.

That was a wonderful ride. Weather was beautiful, pace was good and had a great time riding with many old and new ride mates. Thanks again Donald for keeping the group together as close as possible.

Really beautiful route, but pacing was too challenging for some, and cyclists went missing. Maybe have a cyclist or two serve as sweep next time. I would be willing to share sweep duties in the future.

No problem, Judy. I'm planning to host a longer version of this ride in the near future. Enjoy your day!

Hiya! I'm curious to know how long this trek takes. Thank you!

Including breaks, probably about four to five hours. I expect we'll reach Oshawa GO Station in time for the 17:41 (5:41 PM) train, which would mean a return to Eglinton GO Station at 18:18 (6:18 PM).

      August 18, 2012

    • Donald S.

I expect the ride to take between four and five hours, depending on breaks and stopping for photos and the like. If anyone needs to drop out we will be passing GO stations all the way out.

Judy, the GO train ride from Oshawa GO Station to Eglinton GO Station costs $7.55. If you're taking the TTC to Kennedy TTC Station, it's the regular $3.00 TTC fare. If you're taking GO Transit from Oakville, the GO train ride from Oakville GO Station to Eglinton GO Station is $8.60 one-way, or $17.20 for a day pass. See the TTC website (http://www.ttc.ca/) and/or the GO Transit website (http://www.gotransit.ca/) for more information.

I was not concerned about the cost of the train lol,, I have never come on a meetup for biking, and was wondering what the cost of the meetup is. Thanks... whatever it is, I will pay it tomorrow.

      August 18, 2012

    • A.J.

This event doesn't have a fee attached, but I'm sure Donald would appreciate any contributions people may offer to help him pay for the cost of this Meetup group.

Hi, might be a silly question but i'm new to Toronto. I have a single speed road bike or a hardtail mountainbike? What would be a better option for this ride?

    August 15, 2012

    • A.J.

Julie, if you can ride at about 20 kilometres per hour on your hard-tail, this bicycle would be my recommendation. I can think of about ten hills on this ride that might be overly difficult to climb on a single-speed bicycle. Like Donald said, it's not a race, and we'll wait for anyone who needs more time with these hills.

      August 18, 2012

    • A.J.

Your single-speed would almost certainly be fine everywhere else, though. And again, like Donald said, there will be opportunities to leave early.

Are these hills that you are referring to steep like the ones on Bathurst downtown all the way to Steeles area?

    August 15, 2012

    • Donald S.

I don't ride on Bathurst so I honestly can't comment on that. The ride is mostly flat, there is the occasional up the hill and then down the hill. If anyone has trouble on a hill we'll wait for them, the ride won't be a race to get there as fast as possible.

Hi Donald! How fast will be the ride?

    August 10, 2012

    • Donald S.

Oops, for got to mention that. in the 20 - 22 km/hr range.
