MaRS Data Catalyst www.datacatalyst.marsdd.com­ is a unique and challenging program to bring together data partners from the government, commercial, academic and not-for-profit sectors to understand the startup ecosystem and accelerate new sectors of the innovation economy. MaRS is seeking an Analyst comfortable working in a fast-paced program that operates like a start-up to build a very unique and valuable platform for the innovation economy.


General Accountability


The Data Analyst will be responsible for researching, developing and implementing custom analysis to enable the realization of a collaborative business intelligence platform. This platform will enable a network of startup and innovation support organizations to understand their highly dynamic markets so they can grow companies and social enterprises more effectively and accelerate the innovation economy.

The Data Analyst will work closely with other Data Analysts, Product Managers and Project Managers to create the solutions that meet partner and public needs. Through their expertise and team work the Data Analyst will ensure that sound methodologies are in place to integrate different data sources, produce robust outputs and provide useful insights to end users.

Key Job Responsibilities

Example analysis to research, develop and implement could include:


Segmentation, clustering and predictive modeling of technology companies, investors and entrepreneurs
Identifying patterns of businesses growth in different technology sectors of regional economies.
Estimating start up business, failure and exit in different technology sectors and regions of the economy.
Building profiles of start-up and high-growth businesses to identify trends and patterns that emerge across multiple businesses.
Develop effective analytical methodologies for using data with different levels of geographic, temporal or classification detail and from different sources appropriately e.g. data partners point level data, Stats Can and commercially licensed business listings and investment data (e.g. Thomson Reuters, Dunn and Bradstreet).
To critically assess data quality, completeness and fitness for purpose to then make recommendations on appropriate development and use.
To critically assess the validity of outputs from data processing, analysis and statistical techniques and their fitness for purpose to then make recommendations on appropriate development and use.
To tell the story of the data - identifying meaningful trends, patterns and insights from the data and creating engaging outputs to then work with team members and users to convey the implication and impact of those or to distribute on the web.

Contribute to the team strong technical and domain expertise including:
Excellent statistical, analytical and data mining experience, bringing practical experience and methodologies from relevant domains (e.g. retail, financial services)
Knowledge of business statistics and economic modeling  
Familiarity with Statistics Canada and other data sources
Familiar with data management, access control and cataloguing processes.
Strong data manipulation skills and ability to build custom routines and processes.
Ability to generate charts, graph, tables or maps for advanced visualizations to animate the data.
Ability to work with contractors for other data integration work and help assess output. 

Technical and practical software experience including:
Statistical software (e.g. SAR, SPSS, MatLab etc)
Strong data management and query skills (e.g. SQL, Excel)
Business intelligence and data visualization platforms (e.g. Tableau)
Familiarity with geographic data and GIS software is also desirable.

Educational/Experience Requirements

• Minimum Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, statistics, analytics, economics, information sciences, or similar quantitative discipline or equivalent technical experience.
• Demonstrates deep expertise in working with data and understanding data analysis, interpretation and presentation issues.
• Experience with a range of data manipulation tools and technologies.
