Monthly Solution Architect Scrum

We have two Monthly Solution Architect Scrums this month due to the delay of the February scrum. This is the regular whiteboard or presentation free for all. I'm easing up on the participation focus so wallflowers are welcome. However, I really encourage folks to come up with 5 minute, 15 minute, or even 60 minute presentations if you have anything to contribute.

This week we have two presentations on deck:
- Don Pinto from Couchbase to talk about scaling out with that document-focused db nosql dynamo: Couchbase
- Adam Muise will present a common reference architecture for real-time ingest/processing/analytics with Apache Storm/Kafka/HBase (and maybe some ElasticSearch or SolrCloud)

Ping me with suggestions or volunteers to present...

    4. 1.0 will be very different from any previous version, which are currently (as in 0.9) in a clean-up stage but is still messed up, their focus has obviously shifted from 'casting into MR paradigm for performance edge' into more user-driven. Of course it won't relinquish its competence in CF and clustering (these are the primary reason mahout is still being used)

many things are still in the fog. If you are interested please watch it at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=TEzBraEmh6E

    All the best,
    Yours Peng

    3. 0xdata is planning to merge their H2O (also 100% opensource) with it. Anybody evaluated it before? If possible they will be the first company attaching to it with an opensource business model, definitely a good news.

    2. An easier REST API is ranked high on the to-do list to lower the bar of integration. There is no details so far but maybe solr's API on top of lucene can be a reference.

    1. Mahout is moving to Spark and is ditching Hadoop 1. This is a landsliding consensus driven by massive disillusion of MapReduce on ML tasks, and recently by reinforcement of 0xdata committers, several basic linear algebra binding is already pushed into trunk and more complex algorithms will come (including the much anticipated downpour SGD). Those are implemented in scala, make sure you have the plug-in before checking them out.

    Adam:
Last Friday I was supposed to be at the mahout-1.0 hangout by Suneel, but I got the wrong time and missed the invitation when they started, so I end up smashing my head in the street car :< But still, I watched most of the discussion 30 minutes later. Here is all what I heard:

It was great to see everyone. I'm wondering if in the future if we want to try something like OST (Open Space Technologies). We do have a large portable monitor, flipcharts and whiteboards as collaborative tools available. I know many of you have a lot of expertise to share and maybe the OST format may be better suited for that?
