White Cliffs of Dover - Saturday 2 November (by high speed train)

The iconic White Cliffs are a symbol of England. Since Julius Caesar searched for a place to land here in 55 B.C. they have welcomed many a visitor, and have offered protection from many an invader. A formidable barrier, the cliffs rise over 100 metres from the sea and provide breathtaking views across to the continent.

We will start from Dover, with the castle perched high above the town, marking the beginning of the eastern cliffs. We will walk up to the lookout post used by Winston Churchill and then along the National Trust trail. This makes its way past the South Foreland lighthouse, scene of the first international radio transmission, and then on to St Margaret-at-Cliffe from where the most adventurous of swimmers begin their cross-channel attempts.

We will walk further along the coast, before finishing the day, as we usually do, with food and drink in a local pub.
