This is our 11th OHW and we're looking forward to another exciting weekend of exploring the Olympic Peninsula with it's beautiful rainforests and wild coast. Some highlights of our itinerary will include:
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 19:
*Travel to Forks and enjoy our first (of two) nights at Olympic Suites Inn (condo-style lodging)..on our way we'll make a stop to view the Elwha Dam removal, and possibly the Crescent Lake/Marymere Falls area..
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 20:
*Hike the 9.4-mile Ozette Beach Loop
..which includes the Petroglyphs at Wedding Rocks, several miles of boardwalk, Lake Ozette, etc. We'll head to the hike to access the coast stretch of the trail at low-tide (depart Forks around 8:00AM):
(Current low tide forecast is for 10:28AM on Saturday, October 20th--for the Ozette/LaPush coastal area)
*Enjoying our second night in Forks that evening..possibly a midnight stroll through the town of Forks..
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 21:
*Meander after breakfast|pack up|head out--and possibly enjoy a short hike on the way home..other options include the Rialto|La Push|Mora area, Third Beach, etc. Sometimes we visit the Lake Quinault area for a short hike|refreshment in the lodge|relaxation..
Tidbits about the Ozette Beach Loop hike:
>6.4 miles on boardwalk/trail; 3 miles along the beach. E/M Rating--(E for minimal elevation gain/loss & M for length of hike). Best conditions at LOW TIDE. Petroglyphs at Wedding Rocks (about mid-way down the beach trail section). Great photo ops! Brochures describing the hike and petroglyphs will be located at the trailhead.
Drivers need to have their National Parks Pass!
(Any Federal Lands|Golden Access|Golden Eagle pass works as well..)
*We might stop to view the continuing efforts of the Elwha Dam/Glines Dam removal projects and possibly swing by Salt Creek County Park for tidepool exploration on the way to Forks on Friday. A produce stand on the way would also be nice for fresh food options and additions to our menu!
