Ernani was Verdi's fifth opera, written in 1844 when he was 31 years old. He wrote it very much in the traditional bel canto style of Donizetti and Rossini: not much action, but sizzling emotions which support passionate singing: arias, duets, trios, quartets, etc. It would work just as well as a concert opera. The toe-tapping oom-pah-pah style is very much in evidence throughout. The role of Ernani was a staple of Luciano Pavarotti's repertory.
