Agitated, the Druids demand that High Priestess Norma declare war on the occupying Roman army. She's secretly in love with Pollione, chief Roman, and terrified their two sons will become Roman slaves if the Druids lose. She consults the moon goddess in the famous aria, "Casta diva," one of the most beautiful and difficult arias that few will attempt and fewer still with acclaim. It made Maria Callas (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rjGwS20V94) a legend.

Cast

Montserrat Caballé...Norma, high priestess Josephine Veasey ...Adalgisa, servant to Norma Jon Vickers...Pollione, proconsul of Rome The action occurs largely through melody and lyrics set to glorious music: arias, duets, trios, quartets and choral numbers in this largely static, stand and deliver opera. But there are plenty of vocal fireworks. This type of singing, which requires very little acting, is referred to by wags as "park and bark." Otherwise its classica bel canto (beautiful singing).

Run time: 3 hrs plus intermissions

Bellini was the youngest composer of the three"bel canto" composers whose operas are still performed today, and the shortest lived (34). He is known for his long, melodic lines. "Norma" rivals Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor" for first place in the bel canto repertoire. Rossini is the third and eldest.
