Hi Sean and thank you for the note. I started climbing at age 68 and have been at it now for five months with out making a tremendous amount of progress. I can do most of the 5.8s at VE but have a lot of trouble with the 5.9s and am afraid that I will not get to much beyond the where I am now. I would, however, like to do out door stuff with a group as I am having trouble finding partners so please continue to send me notes. I will try to be at Red Wing this Sunday. In late September I head for AZ for the winter and will try to find some climbing down there. I also work in Mexico,s Copper Canyon for about 6 weeks every winter and there are loads of places to climb down there that have never been done before so if anyone is interested in explring that area I have been there fifty times in the past and know a number of folks there who would like to get something going. Hope to hear from you.

Subject: [rockclimbing-145] Update about the Twin Cities Rock Climbing Meetup

Hey Climbers,

A couple of months ago, our longtime organizer Ariel stepped down from TCRC Meetup.  She handed the mantle to me to keep things going.  So, first off, a sincere thank you to Ariel for 3 years of organizering!  Many of us have found things far beyond a belay here and we owe you a debt of gratitude for keeping it going for so long.

I’ve added Gram to the co-organizer position to help me keep things going and today I have added Brett as an event organizer to get some outdoor Meetups set into motion before the year is out.

Some of you have heard me say this before, so skip ahead.  When I started climbing, I had one partner.  She moved.  I found another.  She stopped climbing to have a baby.  Then came a long stretch of auto-belays.  I found the Meetup group, met some folks outside, caught up with them at the gym, and now have a whole group of close friends with similar climbing ambitions that I have traveled around the state and beyond with on climbing and non-climbing adventures alike.

That’s the quick and dirty of it (minus the dirty).

This group can be a great resource for building a network of climbers to advance your own climbing ambitions.  We let organized outdoor events escape us for the majority of this season, my apologies.  Gram and I are hoping to kick it up a notch going forward to help others have the kind of TCRC Meetup experience that we have had.

With that in mind, I’ll be in Red Wing on Sunday and watch for Brett to set up a weekend of climbing coming up soon with days at both Red Wing and Taylors Falls.

We have had Monday night VE climbing on the calendar now for a couple of years and Thursday nights since the inception of the group.  If you are a regular VE climber on Tuesday or Wednesday nights and would like to spawn a new scheduled night, let me know.  All it takes is someone to volunteer to be a point of contact for others and things are off and running.  Some members of the Thursday night crowd have been climbing together and grabbing beers and a bite to eat afterwards for over 3 years!

Additionally, I will be setting up a fall social at Pizza Luce on a Thursday night (post climbing) in October; I’m shooting for the 13th as of now.  We had one last year and it was a great chance to reconnect with climbers we haven’t seen in a while and meet new TCRC Meetup members.  I also used it as a fundraiser to help cover the dues of Meetup.  Everyone that comes and throws in a buck or two helps the cause!  Watch for that to go on the calendar soon.

That’s all for now; climb on,
