Summer Solstice Century Plus Ride

Ride from Elm Creek around Minneapolis and St. Paul and back to Elm Creek by sunset. Exact route to be determined later. Hopefully with enough of us we can create a route where each of us can lead through different areas with which we are familiar. On this day we have 15 hours and 51 minutes of daylight, let's get out and enjoy the sunrise and sunset on our bikes. Actual sunset is 9:06. This will be an unsupported ride, so please arrange you own SAG.  We will make water, bathroom and food stops.

Thanks everyone for a great ride. Thanks to Beth for putting in her order last September for beautiful weather. The planning and support was awesome!

Top notch event. Kudos to the planning/sag team for a great ride! (And the registration fee was a bargain!) Two thumbs up!

Thank you all especially Bryan and Beth for organizing this and the SAG and leading the way. It was really fun and I will do it again. Let me know if you guys need me lead on Maple Grove route as I'm pretty familiar with the lakes around this area.

Here's the final route. It's significantly different and includes a ride up the Hiawatha corridor. See you bright and early! http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/449943818

I'm creating a text message group that we'll use tomorrow to keep in touch in case of a mechanical, injury, drop, someone being list or route change. If you want to be included please text me your phone number (and tell me who you are in message) by 6:30 tonight and I'll add you to the message group for tomorrow's ride. My phone is[masked]

From UofM lab, I can see the giant mudslide on west river road (bohemian flats) which is now closed, on return, we can stay on east river road to stonearch. While re-routing, also add that St Anthony parkway bridge is also closed so we could probably take Lowry to cross over and I am sure we will be dogging few puddles here and there too. All part of the fun

    (Posted with Beth's permission)

Based on email sent out earlier, it appears that the "official" ride may end sometime in the afternoon. However, TB and I are planning on riding all day, so....

Both of us live in the Golden Valley/Medicine Lake area, and at the end of the "official" ride, we are going to head-out on a western suburbs loop that will allow us to "ride home". I have a rough map laid-out (part of my September Century ride), but we are going to see how this goes and just play it by ear.

IMPORTANT: Everyone is welcome to join us, but know that the END OF THIS RIDE WILL BE AT MEDICINE LAKE, and we will NOT be returning to Elm Creek! Anyone who joins-up with us will have to make suitable end-of-ride arrangements, and you will be responsible for finding your way home, or back to your vehicle at Elm Creek.

Also, unless Bryan says otherwise, there will be NO SAG SUPPORT for this "add-on ride".

    Thanks!

    (And "Thank you, Beth!")

I am just doing the elm creek to calhoun portion.
Note that I rode home today from downtown to Plymouth via the luce line. Deep water at theodore wirth and behind the baseball fields just to the west adjacent to 55.

Thank you Joy! This is very good info. I rode by the Mississippi River from the Coon Rapid Dam to Victory Memorial Lane and there are couple spots around crossing I-94 flooded. I can't imagine with the rain this week. I hope more comment like this so we can prepared. Thanks!

Trailhead Cycling has canceled the picnic and band for Saturday evening at Elm Creek.

I think they canceled for reasons other than the weather. Right now Saturday looking pretty good.

One change. Our lunch will still be at the same time, but at The Sample Room, a few hundred yards north of Psycho Suzi's. They were able to give us a definite reservation. It's a great place.

All, I will be following/leading the riders through the whole day and providing SAG support. I want to offer up to you all that if you wish to have me transport things in my car you can. Along the ride as the ride progresses you can put your extra clothing layers in my car. Or if you want me to transport something from the very beginning of the ride, like rain gear just in case. I will be nearby the whole day. This will be fun!

    Summer Solstice Ride!

June 21 is the Summer Solstice -- that means more daylight for more miles! Join us Saturday, June 21, for a National Bike Challenge group ride. We challenge all riders to pedal together - in spirit - as we rack up the mileage toward our goal of 30 million miles! Join us: http://bit.ly/SolsticeRide Any guesses as to how many miles can we pedal together in one 24 hour period?

    SUMMER SOLSTICE RIDE SUMMARY

Please see email for full message

We will leave from Elm Creek Park Reserve at exactly 5:26 a.m. Please get there early so we can have pedals up when the sun comes up!

The basic plan it to do a 98-mile loop that starts and ends at Elm Creek Park Reserve. We’ll take two long breaks along the route in order to break up the ride and pace ourselves. People wishing to be less hardcore, or who wish to start can start at Lake Calhoun at 9:00 or at Psycho Suzi’s at 1:00 are welcome to join the ride in progress. Even if you join late you’d still have a shot at a century ride! Many are shooting for a double-metric century ride (124 miles).

Ken’s number is[masked] and Beth’s number is[masked]-7368. Please send a text including your name if we do not have your number as soon as you read this and add our numbers in your phone.

Everyone on the ride should have back up transportation arrangements in the event they have to stop riding.

I sent this out as an email, but not sure it was sent. A planning meeting for tonight[masked] is planned, 5:30 big loop from Elm Creek Chalet, then off to the dam at about 6:30 from the park. Discussion, route planning and Gyros at Olympia cafe, 247 Central Ave, Osseo, MN 55369 around 8 or so, they have wifi but close at 9. If you are planning on the dinner only please let me know so we know what size of table. [masked]

    Here is some basic information-----sunrise = 5:26 a.m.; sunset = 9:03 p.m. Total daylight 15:36:53; Solar noon 1:15 p.m.

We can add the entire loop at Elm Creek depending on our return time. If anyone is free tomorrow night[masked], say around 5 or so, we could do an Elm Creek loop or longer, then discuss the route LMK[masked] Beth

    1 · June 12, 2014

we should schedule some eating/meeting places for more bikers to join us. I doubt a lot of people cannot commit a whole day event and need to have a late start plan or an early bail out route.

    2 · June 11, 2014

  • Ken B.

Hey, should we meet to discuss this ride? Some would like to ride sunup to sundown, but others wonder if they can ride 15+ hours. Maybe a century beginning and ending at Elm Creek, so that those that want to do 15 mile laps or other loops can bike until sunset it until they can't go anymore?

    May 26, 2014

    • Beth

If you go to my mapmyride it is listed under Solstice tentative, take a look. Yes, the last 15 mile loop would be optional depending on how we all feel and what time we return. I like Paul's idea of a double metric.

    February 17, 2014

I have been recovering from knee surgery this season and just said yesterday my goal is to do a century next year. I'm not super speedy is this a fast ride?

    September 15, 2013

    • Jim K.

Linda, given the amount of hours available, and the ride title ("Century Plus"), I’m pretty sure we are going to ride further than 100 miles! After all, 100 miles over 16 hours results in only a 6.25 MPH average...

      2 · September 15, 2013

    • kari

Well factor in stops and breaks I'm guessing we can easily do 100. It gives me a good goal over the winter to train!

      1 · September 15, 2013

  • paul l

it sounds like a day to do a double centuries !

    1 · September 15, 2013

  • Michael

I’m looking forward to this too, because there’s noting better than riding with our friendly group, and being bathed in long sunlight. We can log some serious one day mileage, if we access to food and water along the way. This is going to be a great ride!

    1 · September 15, 2013

I am *really* looking forward to this one; cycling from sunrise to sunset, on the longest day of the year. Sounds like fun! :)
