The University of San Francisco Data Science & Artificial Intelligence Speaker Series is produced by the Data Institute. This group brings researchers and practitioners together with students in the MS in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence graduate program, faculty, and interested members of the public to discuss topics of interest in analytics and data science.
Talks take place in person on Fridays from 12:30–2:00 pm at the USF Downtown San Francisco campus, located at 101 Howard Street in the East Cut neighborhood, at the heart of San Francisco’s downtown innovation corridor. We encourage attendees to bring their lunch and join us for these mid-day conversations.

As AI moves from experimentation into everyday decisions, the hardest questions are no longer only technical. Who is accountable when an AI system gets it wrong? How do we balance privacy, safety, and innovation? And what does it take to turn responsible AI principles into practice?
Join the USF Data Institute for a conversation between Lisa Thee, AI executive, founder, and Head of the International AI Safety Commission at the Global Council for Responsible AI, and Shubham Atreja, Assistant Professor of Data Science and AI at the University of San Francisco. Drawing on Lisa's experience building and governing AI across industry, government, and nonprofit settings, and Shubham's research on how computing technologies shape human behavior and society, they will explore where responsible AI is working, where it falls short, and what leaders, practitioners, and students can do about it.

Co-Founder and Chief Strategy Officer, Boardwalk Health; Head of the International AI Safety Commission, Global Council for Responsible AILisa Thee is an AI executive, founder, and board director with more than 25 years of experience across startups, Fortune 500 companies, government, and academia. She leads the International AI Safety Commission, which works on global coordination for advanced AI safety and governance, and teaches Responsible AI at the University of Michigan. At Intel, she led a partnership with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children that used AI and analytics to cut the national response time to child exploitation reports from 30 days to 24 hours. She is an exited founder, serves on the boards of several AI startups, and is a TEDx speaker and author of Go! Reboot Your Career in 90 Days. She holds a degree in Industrial and Operations Engineering from the University of Michigan.
Shubham Atreja, PhD
Assistant Professor of Data Science and AI, University of San FranciscoShubham Atreja is an Assistant Professor of Data Science and AI at the University of San Francisco. He brings deep experience designing computing technologies in both industry and academia to understand how these systems shape human behavior and society. He holds a PhD in Information Science from the University of Michigan.
About the Center for AI & Data Ethics
The Center for AI & Data Ethics at the USF Data Institute addresses the responsible use of data and AI through education, research, public policy, and community engagement. Building on the Data Institute's work in applied data ethics since 2019, the Center brings together faculty, students, practitioners, and policymakers to examine how algorithmic systems affect people and to develop practical approaches for building technology that serves the public good.About the USF Data Science & AI Speaker Series
