Discuss and/or critique an OS/website/app

Please join us for an evening of spirited UX design discussion!

We will be holding a discussion at Kent State University on Wednesday, March 20th (6pm-8pm).  The meeting will focus on the evaluation of  one or more prominent interfaces from a user experience designer’s perspective. This will not be a traditional talk; instead we will jointly conduct a "cognitive walk through" of the interface(s) as a group. (Also giving us an opportunity to discuss the pros and cons of this evaluation method.) Feel free to make suggestions for us to critique (websites, operating systems, etc.) as a group before the meet up or during!

The primary interface that will be evaluated by the group is the Windows 8 operating system, which has been designed specifically around a touch-screen model. We will explore how the user is able to, or unable to, interact with this new OS, in both the a touch-screen and traditional monitor context. Depending on the interests of the group, we may also opt to compare/contrast this user experience with other operating systems.

Note: You do not need to have explored the Windows8 OS prior to the meeting to benefit from this meeting!

Please join us on Wednesday, March 20 from 6pm-8pm

I'm a maybe. This sounds fake but I legitimately have jury duty that week. So, possibly?

Thanks for the insight/link Keith! I really appreciate it! Any additional info would be great (if you've attended before). Feel free to shoot me a message, I'm just a rookie in this all.

I hope to gain the support of the UX Akron group in assisting me with possibly coming up with some ideas to get the conversation started. This will be my first attempt at presenting on a topic, so any input would be greatly appreciated.

Carol, as well as some friends at Kent State University, have secured a date/location and have been a huge help. So thank you all for that!

    Thank you all!

It was suggested at last nights Akron/Canton web meet up that it might be a better idea to critique something that none of us had a hand in (unless you really want to submit yourself to that...)

So my ideas thus far are to critique Windows 8, Elementary (http://elementaryos.org) and possibly some other OS's or websites. As always, feel free to make suggestions!

This topic could also be an open forum to display any current projects you're working on that you want feedback on (whether pertaining to UX or not...I suppose).

I am just hoping to get the UX Akron Meetup group back together because I've felt like the past 3 meetups were all a great success, thanks to Carol and everyone else who participated! I have also suggested this topic/suggestion in the Akron/Canton Web Meetup group, with little response yet from there either...

Great suggestion! If you have a site/app that you'd like reviewed please list it here.
I'll start looking at locations including UA.
I was hoping to have a meeting around Feb. 11th or 12th if that works for people - though I realize that's very soon.

Hi James and all, Since we're so close to next week we're going to push it out another week and just do a happy hour - I'll announce the date ASAP. Let's keep up the discussion on this idea for the March meeting. That will give me time to find a space with a projector. :)

Sounds great Carol! I'll look into some websites to critique, but some help from other members would be great. I know personally I'd love to get input from other professionals on how each of them approaches a problem and the changes they would make.

Depending on everyones "area of concentration", websites might be a better thing to critique for the benefit of us all. Critiquing an OS might not pertain to our day-to-day work, although critiquing Windows 8 would be fun...

Either way, input from other members of this meet-up group would be great. We can even possible do a joint meet-up with the Akron/Canton Web Meetup, they may be able to provide helpful insight. I'll contact someone in that group.
