Announcing a new Meetup for Ulster County Outdoors!

What: Hike to Peekamoose and Table Mts from Denning trail head

When: Sunday, June 20,[masked]:00 AM

Where: (A location has not been chosen yet.)

Hike to the tops of Table Mt (3,847 ft) and Peekamoose Mt (3,843 ft) in the Southern Catskills! Don't you just love that name - Peekamoose? Along the way we'll cross Deer Shanty Brook and the East branch of the Neversink River. There are four viewpoints along the hike, giving views of Slide, Panther, Giant Ledge, Lone, Rocky, Balsam Cap, Friday, Wittenberg, Cornell, Ashokan Reservoir, the Blackheads, Plateau and Sugar Loaf. Coming down from Table, there's a view south to the Gunks and beyond. Pray for a clear day!

Map: New York-New Jersey Trail Conference Map #43. Route first follows the yellow-blazed Phoenicia-East Branch Trail, then turns right onto the blue-blazed Peekamoose-Table Trail. We'll re-trace our steps back to the cars.

Distance is 9 miles round trip; vertical rise 1750 ft. Note that although we summit two 3800 ft mountains, they are only separated by a saddle into which we drop[masked] feet.

Hike will be done at a relaxed pace. No one will be left behind.

What to bring: plenty of water, lunch, bug repellent, sun screen

Directions to trail head:
Just North of the Village of Ellenville (Ulster County), find the intersection of US 209 and NYS 55. Take NYS 55 West towards the Rondout Reservoir. Drive to the Western end of Rondout Reservoir on NYS 55. At the Western end of the reservoir, NYS 55A rejoins NYS 55. From this point, continue West on NYS 55 for 2.9 miles, then turn right on CR 19 (Claryville Rd), just beyond the Town of Neversink Highway Dept building. In Claryville bear right onto Denning Rd (follow signs to Strauss Center). In about 6 miles you will pass Strauss Center. The road becomes dirt. In about another 2 miles the road ends at the trail head.

People coming from Kingston and points North might want to consider taking CR 42 from the Western end of the Ashokan Reservoir, then CR 46 and CR 153, then NYS 55A to reach the Western end of the Rondout Reservoir. Consult your Ulster County road map.

Cancellation info: If the weather is doubtful, will email Yes and Waiting List folks the evening before the hike.
