http://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/d/8/1/0/event_93775312.jpegA little change of plans. Originally we were having a 2 hour ride. Samantha's objective was to have fun and not to engage in torturous exercise. Thus, it was not required to actually climb a hill as much as be a participant in the ride (although I'd like to have seen some friendly racing up Torrance Street). Unfortunately Nathan has messed up his back temporarily, but is still excited to have a meet-and-greet tomorrow at The Living Room. This isn't just a campaign stop. He's not forming a fan club here, but wants to talk real bicycling issues with real bicyclists. Agree/disagree with him, we're looking for open dialogue. As soon as his back is in shape, Sam and I are looking forward to planning a recovery ride... letting him ride some other challenging areas instead. Next time it won't be hills, but instead, challenges such as the bike lane from Florida Street to downtown, Harbor before you get to Nimitz, or maybe dodging cars crossing the beautiful Mission Valley Bike Path that is missing crossing ramps. know of a bike lane that's confusing or looks as if it belongs in a third world country? Bring it on, we want to know about it!
At 9:00 Sigurd is still offering his road to discipline, as mentioned at http://sdbikecommuter.com/forums/comments.php. A wimpier(shorter) option is riding Titus/Bandini/Torrance with me. I love Sigurd's route, just don't have time tomorrow.
This election could be a game changer in how San Diego’s elections will be from this year onward. For too long, the bicycling demographic has simply been ignored. At this point in history we have a lot of catching up to do, and I believe we need a visionary leader to take us there. He's not only a bicyclist, but an ironman triathelete also. What better fit, if you value quality of life in San Diego, and want to promote a healthy environment..
It seems like Nathan Fletcher could be that leader. We’d like to hear your thoughts in person this Saturday and I’m sure Fletcher would too. Here is an opportunity to talk to Mayoral Candidate Nathan Fletcher, go on a ride and, climb hills with him while expressing what you’d like to see from a bicycle friendly mayor.
Fletcher intends to release a comprehensive bike plan policy next week along with his vision and the specific steps he will take to ensure that San Diego becomes the world’s best city for bicycling. But it is important to talk to him about what it is that San Diego is lacking so he is aware of all the issues that we face on the streets everyday.
For those of you that haven't met Samantha yet... if the tortoise and the hare rode bikes, she'd be the tortoise. Steady pace, smelling the roses as she rides by, yet thinking of her destination.
