Are you currently practicing urban farming, gardening, or raising livestock or poultry?

I divide my time between Seattle and Grapeview. I find the deer problems to be challenging in Mason County, but at our home near downtown Seattle I am in the process of turning our outdoor space into an urban farm. Took 3 years to talk my husband into my plan, but I just gave away dozens of mature ornamental bedding plants on Craigslist so I'm starting with a clean (but muddy!) slate. Chicken coop is up, but no chickens yet. I grew up in Wenatchee, surrounded by orchards & gardens. We had horses, raised cattle, had milk goats, chickens and rabbits. Once a farm girl, always a farm girl, even in the heart of the city.

What subjects do you feel you are most knowledgeable about?

Preserving of all types. Canning, pressure canning, freezing, dehydrating, fermenting, candying, curing, infusing. Love to cook, as well. Big fan of the barter system and food swaps, and have participated off & on since attending my first barter fair in 1981.

What sustainability subjects would you like to learn more about?

Always love to learn more from others about growing my own food, gardening, keeping livestock. Would like to learn more about cheese making, beekeeping and seed saving, even though I've already dabbled in them.

I'm a Certified Master Food Preserver. Been obsessed with preserving for decades. I teach classes, do demos and talk about preserving with anyone who will listen :) I can be found on Twitter, Facebook & my website, all named "Learn To Preserve".
