The focus of the talk will be about Ivan's career in the visual effects field and how he has worked successfully as an Artist.  Ivan will talk about his experiences and share some war stories.

Speaker Bio


Classicly trained as an artist, Ivan DeWolf began his career working on music videos and student projects in Chicago in 1992. He moved to Los Angeles and began working on films in 1994. He helped develop groundbreaking effects and learned programming under the pressures of production at a time when virtually every film involved effects that had never been tried before. In 2000, Ivan founded Martian Labs, a software and visual effects production company. Martian Labs developed ocean surface animation tools, fluids rendering tools, and pipeline tools, and was hired on as consultants, developing techniques deemed to complex to solve in-house for numerous films and television commercials at larger facilities.

After working with VIFX, Rhythm & Hues, DD, Method, Asylum, Dreamworks, CIS, Rainmaker, Embassy Effects, and numerous other effects production companies, he switched to pure software development. He developed software tools used on several films, developed tools for procedurally generating snowboard tracks for the SSX video game at EA, worked with the Solid Angle team on the Arnold Renderer set of tools, and now is developing core technologies at Electronic Arts. With experience running the gamut from artist to technician, almost all of it done folowing a procedural paradigm, using the Side Effects family of software tools.
