Two Sessions: Telling Lies With Maps and Visual Analytics in Video Game Design

Hello!

It's been a while since the last meetup for Vancouver DataViz -- That said, let's get the ball rolling again! I'm super jazzed to have two speakers and to get the gang together again.

Meetup Agenda:

1. VDV Group News (5 mins)

2. Session One: How to Lie with Maps (20 mins)

-- John Schaub will be presenting a short talk on ‘How to Lie with Maps’ discussing the uses and pitfalls of maps in Data Visualization. John is the Director of Information Systems and Business Intelligence at HootSuite and is also developing the Introduction to Data Visualization course for BCIT’s Business Analytics program launching in September.

3. Session Visual Analytics in Video Game Design (20 mins)

-- Bardia Aghabeigi will outline how Visual analytics can be used as an assistive tool in design and production of video games. This presentation explore how they used interactive and animated Flow and Heat maps to narrate the players' experience in an oncoming RTS game named Hardware produced by Blackbird Interactive Inc. Bardia is a software engineer and data scientist who has worked more than 5 years in different software and game companies like Electronic Arts, Blackbird Interactive, Bardel Entertainments, and System Group. He holds a Master degree in User Research and Analytics from Simon Fraser University, and a Bachelor in Software Engineering.

4. Member Announcements

-- Any member can make a 30 second announcement (10 mins)

5. Networking (10 mins)

6. Wrap-up (5 mins)

We look forward to seeing you there!

Awesome. Just wondering Wayne, do we need to scale up to a bigger facility? We still have a week and it looks like there's a lot of interest in the two topics!

    Cheers,
    Jaime
