Course Outline
Protect yourself from the harmful effects of stress, high blood pressure, anxiety, insomnia and depression. In this eight week course you will learn effective meditation practices in a step-by-step way, which you can bring to daily life.
Class 1: Introduction and overview on mindfulness meditation; 25 minutes guided body scan meditation, loving-kindness (metta) meditation; Q&A.
Class 2: 25 minutes of guided body sensation meditation plus breath meditation; Talk: the benefits of meditation; 10 minutes walking meditation. 10 minutes loving-kindness contemplation. Q&A.
Class 3: Talk: The Five Precepts and Three Stages of practice; Mindfulness in daily life; Setting up a daily practice; Causality and practice. 25 minutes of guided breath meditation; 10 minutes walking meditation; 10 minutes loving-kindness contemplation;
Class 4: Talk: the Five Hindrances I; 30 minutes guided breath meditation (Ajahn Thanissaro method); 5 minutes walking meditation or QiGong; 10 minutes loving-kindness contemplation.
Class 5: Talk: the Five Hindrances II; 30 minutes guided breath meditation (Ajahn Thanissaro method); 10 minutes sympathic joy meditation and the four Brahma Viharas.
Class 6: 30 minutes silent unguided meditation; Talk: Right Effort, Right Mindfulness and Right Absorption; Nimittas and psychic experiences in meditation; 10 minutes Loving-kindness contemplation.
Class 7: 30 minutes silent meditation; monk CD talk 10 minutes; Talk: meditation and physical pain; 10 minutes Loving-kindness contemplation.
Class 8: 30 minutes silent meditation; Review of the course and what to do next; The meditation retreat experience; Dealing with anxiety and persistent thoughts. Focusing on inner emotional happiness as the priority. Results of course experienced by many include: an ability to relax, decreases in insomnia and greater energy and enthusiasm for life.
About the instructors
Brian Ruhe: Brian is a former monk and has taught meditation for 18 years. He is the author of two meditation books and guided meditation CDs.
Jack Liu: Co-teacher, Chinese translator: Jack is a Ph.D. candidate in Buddhist meditation with more than one decade of practice. Currently, he is Coordinator of the Mindfulness Program at JCE International College of Holistic Medicine.
