Happy 2015 Web Speeders!

I'm excited to announce a speedy kickoff the new year with two great web performance talks from distinguished speakers at Mozilla & Mobify. The talks will be taking place at Mobify, Suite 300, 948 Homer St, on Feb 23th. As the talks start promptly at 7pm, please arrive early. Mobify will be sponsoring pizza and drinks after the talks for the social between 8 and 9:30.

These events tend to fill up so RSVP early, and keep your status up to date! Look forward to seeing you in a few weeks!

Talk 1

Our first talk is from Stephanie Hobson (https://twitter.com/stephaniehobson) of Mozilla. Stephanie works for Mozilla as a front-end developer on the MDN (Mozilla Developer Network). She began building web sites while working towards a degree in History but switched industries when she realized she could get paid to build all this cool stuff and has been building standards compliant, progressively enhanced, assessable sites as big and small ever since.

Title: Mobile First Puts Performance First

Description: Is the desktop part of your responsive site slowing down your mobile users? For many of us, our workflow is still desktop first: selling, getting sign-off, and coding the desktop sometimes without ever seeing a mobile comp - but loading desktop content only to hide part of it means our mobile users are downloading more than they need to. There are small changes we can make today and big changes in approach we can make by drawing inspiration from recent redesigns like theguardian.com and Smashing Magazine.

Talk 2

Our second talk is given by Kyle Peatt (https://twitter.com/kpeatt) from Mobify. Kyle Peatt is an interaction designer and front-end developer in equal parts. He strongly believes that every designer should have the skills to build what they conceive. Kyle manages a team of like-minded Designers and UI Developers on the Customer Success team at Mobify. Together, they build amazing mobile web experiences for enterprise clients.

Title: The Wind in your Hair: A Quick Overview of Perceived Performance

Description: Your users don’t care about how many requests your site makes or fast it paints. They care about the impact those things make — their perception of that performance. Instead of looking at performance as an engineering problem, Kyle talks about why we should think about it as a design problem. This talk will explore all of the ways designers can work to improve and enhance how fast your site or app feels to the user — even if it’s technically slow. He’ll walk through the theories behind perceived performance, give some examples from sites and apps that are using it well, and give some tips for making it happen on your own projects.

Afterparty

Beer, pizza and web performance.
