WordPress 3.8 Release

*********************************************

UPDATE November 30th:

We now have an agenda for the evening: Three short presentations on new features followed by a group discussion + Q&A.

• Kate Moore will talk about the new UI

• Priscilla Biju Then will talk about the new theme experience and widgets

• Robert Dall will talk about the new Twenty Fourteen theme

If you want to contribute too, hit us up and we'll make it happen!

*********************************************

Come learn and discuss the soon-to-be-released WordPress 3.8! Bring your questions, your comments, your passionate ideas.

3.8 is scheduled to be released in early December and people in the know say the date is December 12. The new version includes a fully redesigned user interface for the admin panel as well as a plethora of other cool features.

We're leaving the format of this meetup open to your requests. That means you can help decide how this will go down. Want to speak or show off a feature? Want us to do a roundtable? Want a specific person to do a specific presentation? Let us know in the comments below or as you sign up and we'll keep you posted on what's going to happen.

As before, if you RSVP and then remember you have plans to circumvent the world in an old dingy you found on the side of the road while out shopping for a new sweater, please change your RSVP status so someone without a passion for rowing around the world on their own can come join the conversation in your place.

And a big shout out to The Network Hub whose continued support for the meetup keeps the meetup alive. If you're looking for a coworking space, The Network Hub really is the place to be.

    Just a note on usage of the meetup group page. If you are going to have a discussion not directly related to the meetup itself, do so in the forum section. When you leave a comment on the page for a specific meetup it is sent to everyone who was there.

      Thank you Morton. I hope I am being reasonable when I believe that those who came to the 3.8 meeting where we discussed 2014 theme would be interested in topics related to that meeting.

    Hello Brothers and Sisters. For those using the 2014 theme there is a great plugin called 14 colors. I allows you to change the side colors and text colors and background colors. Check it out

    This is what I did with my site

      Good choice in Avada Theme. Looks like we have a good match. Will call you soon. I also specialize in digital marketing too so you are in good hands.

    Those first two look like they have a lot of overlap in concepts, but both look like good starts. One is twice as long as the other, and looks as though it goes into more depth. I'd try the shorter one first. The CSS3 course is probably best left until you get a good grasp on basic CSS. CSS3 adds some new features, but isn't really a new "version" of CSS as much as it is set of new capabilities.

      Yes. Start with CSS Fundamentals. I'll ask James what his recommendations are.

      ....

      Thanks Morton. And today watched you live on Lynca.com. Also just got an answer from Lynda.com

      Let me explain the titles, as we use these names often at lynda.com.

      - Fundamentals: Usually a broad but high-level and relatively short overview of a given technology (in this case, CSS). A great first movie to watch.
      - Core Concepts: This is a deep dive into the core concepts of CSS, and usually a much longer, more detailed coverage of the subject. I'd recommend this second.
      - CSS 3 First Look: this is *specifically* a look at features that are new in CSS version 3, for those who have been familiar with previous versions. Watch this last out of the three, as it's mostly just covering the key changes in CSS between version releases.
      Hope this helps- happy learning!

      Hi Johnny. Those look like good online courses. If you'd like to learn CSS closer to home, I teach a CSS Fundamentals class at Langara College. Details can be found here: http://davearthurweb..... Feel free to contact me directly for more details. Good luck with your learning!

      Thank. Very good quality courses. Will consider.

    On topic, really liked the comparison from 3.7 to 3.8 changes.

    Just had a very quick look at the 2014 theme CSS, and the following styles should negate the -48px offset.

    .full-width .site-content .has-post-thumbnail .entry-header, .full-width.singular .site-content .hentry.has-post-thumbnail {
    margin-top: 0;
    }

    This can be added using any plugin (JetPack was mentioned) that allows you to append CSS code to your theme. If you're comfortable with making a child theme, this can go in your child theme's CSS file to accomplish the same thing a little more elegantly.

      Hi Johnny

      The first place I look is in the browser inspector, where you can choose an element in the HTML and see exactly what rules are being applied. It's not always that simple, as there can be many layers of rules that can cancel each other out.

      As for online courses in CSS, give Lynda.com a try. You can get a free week, and that should be enough time to get through one or two basic CSS courses.

    ……

    Another serious problem. If you ad an image to the top of the page it cuts it off. Have a look at this.

    And advice?

    December 12, 2013

      .entry-header {
      margin-top: -48px;
      }

      Thank you Chris Mallinson your advice was very helpful.

    Interesting discussion on backups last night. Although I bought the developer version of BackupBuddy (for my clients), I use shell scripts and crontabs to run offsite daily/weekly file and database backups, and keep about 4 months worth of weeklies. Have also tested scripts and procedures for site migration and restoration.

    Hello. Can someone help me understand how Morton fixed the picture problem?

    I don't know how.

    Thanks.

    ….

    But to be honest. I see problems with 3.8

    I can’t even post a picture so it aligns LEFT.

    Have a look.

    http://vancouveryogastudios.com/

    I tried everything and the picture will not stay LEFT but on top
    Any advice?

      It looks like the issue is with the content, not the images. Your text is a bunch of <h4>, which are set to be clear:both

    Yay. I made it into the gang and off the waiting list. I feel so special. I'd like to thank the academy, my parents, and little baby Jesus for making this all possible

    December 16, 2013

      As a Christian I would like to thank little baby Jesus for coming into this world and teaching us the Good Samaritan example. Every time one mentions the Good Samaritan example we can thank little baby Jesus.

    Seeing as we are approaching Jul and all I'm wondering if I should suggest everyone bring something snacky to the event. Our last experiment for Valentine's Day was a huge success. Thoughts? Ideas?
