This presentation will be one and a half hour lab style presentation and is targeted at developers. Coding skills are essential. You are encouraged to bring your laptop to follow along.

WordPress theming using Backbone.js is a new territory that opens up exciting possibilities for Single Page Applications in WordPress. As a contributing author to one of the first Backbone.js driven WordPress themes, Zack will guide you through how to get started with building these intriguing new themes. To begin, you will learn the basic organization of Backbone.js. Next, Zack you teach you how to apply a Backbone.js structure to WordPress themes in a standards compliant manner. Finally, he will address the inherent issues with Backbone.js WordPress themes including problematic pitfalls.

As part of the presentation, you will have the opportunity to build a starter WordPress theme using Backbone.js. If you would like to code along with the presentation, it is recommended that you have a working WordPress installation available on your computer during the meetup.

About Zack Tollman

Residing in Portland, Oregon, Zack longs for the cold, snowy days of his Alaskan youth. He enjoys strumming his guitar, playing hockey, and spending time with his wife and dog. Otherwise, you'll find him at his computer meticulously spinning lines of clean WordPress code working as a developer at The Theme Foundry.

Awesome talk. The topic was really interesting, and Zack was a great speaker. I'm always a little hazy with JavaScript, but had no trouble following along and grasping the concepts. I'll definitely be watching the video again (and again) to understand Backbone better and try it out for myself. Thanks to Zack for coming all the way up to Vancouver, and to all the organizers and Briteweb!

We've gotten the approval to add more seats for the meetup. I have bumped up the RSVP list to 50. Not everyone will have desk space so if you're bringing your laptop try to show up 10-15 minutes early.

The meeting duration is shown as 6:30 to 9, but the text says "hour and a half presentation" - when do you plan to start the actual talk? Affects whether to have dinner before or after... thanks.

There will be about 10 minutes of intro and then the talk. We'll likely be down the presentation around and then have time for lots of questions. I personally would recommend an early dinner :)
