I felt compelled compelled to write this note.
Some people may follow these discussions online, and feel like there is no need to attend the meetings in person. They think that we are discussing the same things online that we discuss in person. Things couldn't be much farther from the truth.
In reality, just a few people post online. I even think that the majority of people that attend the meetings in person, don't read the online comments. So I do hope that everybody reading this does give the in-person meetings a chance.
As a side note, one of the things I find interesting about the in-person meetings are the range of types of people that attend. We even get a few kids, from middle school, to high school, to college. (I'm even starting to recognize some of them, from attending more than once.)
Another interesting thing, is in how the subject can be discussed. For example, our next topic is Halloween. This can bring up a multitude of side topics. For example, do evil spirits exist? Some people may even share their stories. This may lead into a discussion on how these kind of events can be interpreted. And that is just an example of one way in which the conversation could proceed (we don't know what will happen until it happens). So if you're thinking that the topic of Halloween doesn't interest you and therefore you should skip this topic, think again... because the topic is only the launching point into the discussion.
Finally, I think there's a really great reason for attending these kinds of meetings. Are we able to explain and defend our belief system? How would you know that unless you talk to people of different beliefs? So this forum is a very rare opportunity to get feedback on your belief system, and the reasons to justify it. In fact, as far as I know, this is the only place in the world
where this kind of forum exists on a monthly basis. Some people, such as myself, feel that the search for truth is vital. And the best way to know the truth is to compare competing ideas, and see which one appears to be most compelling, when all the relevant facts are evaluated.
And so once again I invite you to attend our meeting on Sun. Oct. 24th at Peoples Church in Vancouver. All of the information, such as time, date, location, who will be presenting, etc. can be found here:http://www.meetup.com/Vancouver-Science-Religion-Discussion-Group/calendar/12123210/
