- Fitness: Echo Canyon to Cat in the Hat down Fossil Canyon LoopCowboy Trails, LAS VEGAS, NV
Please read the entire hike description. New participants will be required to sign a Waiver like the Disclaimer below.
✶Please arrive between 4:45p – 4:55p✶
Note: While this constitutes 1 of 8 of our (Liz Hyatt's and my) hikes in the Cowboy Fitness Series, we are solely hosting it this evening before the start of the Charleston Series, beginning Sat., 6/1.
Hosts: Liz has over 550 hikes & Paul has over 370 hikes with VegasHikers; both are co-creators of this Fitness Series and proud alumni of the Summer Charleston Series.
📌This is a loop hike that starts at the Cowboy Trail Rides parking and runs east-southeast into Echo Canyon, before turning south where we'll pick up Cat in the Hat connecting to Fossil Canyon and back to the trailhead. The route features some Class 2 scrambling over boulders and pour-overs that run along a shaded wash. The walls of Echo Canyon are full of cool fossils like crinoids, gastropods, sponges, and corals. Since the goal of this hike is fitness, you'll need to maintain a fast pace.
Everyone starts on the Waitlist. If we haven't hiked together, then let's get to know each other! 🙂 We kindly request: 1) your VegasHikers profile displays a picture and 2) profile questions are completed. Please RSVP with integrity and if unable to attend, then move yourself to 'Not Going' before the event starts.

- TRAFFIC DETOUR (from Henderson) - Ft Apache south end is temporarily closed.
- From Blue Diamond Road, exit at Durango and turn left on Pebble to get to
- Ft Apache. Then go north one block to turn left at Ford Avenue.
For most hikers, this is a "relatively easy" 4.3 mile (level 2) "no scrambling" hike, elevation gain 650 feet. From COUGAR AVENUE parking, we first hike around the mountain bend on an old mining road. We ascend to follow a mountain ridge trail to Ike's Peak and back again. Hiking shoes: YES, tennis shoes: NO.

2-GROUPS NOTE • This hike started with Trail-Seekers. Now, most RSVPs are often by members of the larger VegasHikers. If you belong to both Meetup groups, choosing to RSVP via Trail-Seekers reduces the chance of hikers stuck on a VegasHikers "waitlist". (Don't RSVP from both groups for the same hike.)
BTW, the total 2-Group attendance count will be most up-to-date on Trail-Seekers. Since VegasHikers has a signup limit, unless it's full, I try to keep VH numbers a bit lower until just before the hike starts.
Upload to share your Meetup hike photos with others. I will re-post to the Trail-Seekers Meetup group and post to Facebook Summerlin Outdoors group.
Location is southwest of Rhodes Ranch and Cowabunga Canyon water park near Ft Apache Road. If more than 5 minutes late, spot us walking up the hill.

We DO NOT meet on Reynolds Spring Road or next to the water detention basin.

The route includes a steep uphill climb through a very narrow slot with a lot of obstacles that will challenge even the best climbers. The route also has "Gaby's Passage," a small cave to climb through as a passage from one portion of the hike to another.
We'll return by crossing over the V2 route and head down through one of David Salcido's famous drop slots, which will require special technique. Afterward we'll visit an arch before finishing up. The route will take you through places that you haven't been and go over, under, and through obstacles that you haven't seen before. There are many advanced obstacles on this route. Be prepared to remove your pack.
On this route I've seen a tortoise, owls, hawks, along with the normal crows and lizards. You can look at my wildlife gallery for some of my favorite pictures of animals I've seen.
http://richardwaltjen.com/galleries-2/animal-gallery/Not for beginners or those afraid of heights. There are many places that require advanced scrambling skills and there is some exposure. You must be able to pull your body weight up and lower yourself down using your arms.
• Helmets are always welcome. Be sure to use one that doesn't block your sight.
• Always carry "in case of emergency" numbers with you.
• No guests will be allowed without my prior approval.
YOU MUST BE ON THE "GOING" LIST IN ORDER TO GO ON THIS HIKE. CRASHING WILL NOT BE ALLOWED.

✨Welcome to the 11th Annual Charleston Series✨
These hikes get progressively harder each week in mileage, elevation gain and altitude designed to train up for long-distance high-altitude hikes. For those unfamiliar with hiking at higher elevations, guidance and tips will be provided on pace, breathing, gear, food/liquid, trail etiquette, and preparations.A secondary benefit is that carpooling, hiking and tailgating with many of the same people each week enables you to develop friendships and trust in each other which you will need as the hikes get harder.
To date, 155 hikers have used this training series to reach Charleston Peak for the first time - will your name be added to the list this year? A pin is available for those who participate in the series and reach the summit of Charleston Peak.
