Free Class: Prepare for Zion Narrows (Summerlin REI)
Details
It's time for our annual presentations on one of our favorite hikes -- in fact, it's rated the #5 Best Adventure in the World by National Geographic, and only 3 hours drive away!!
"The Narrows" (http://www.nps.gov/zion/planyourvisit/zion-narrows.htm) in Zion National Park is an unforgettable hike for anyone up to the challenge, whether you're an experienced backpacker or a curious beginner. Come learn two different ways to experience this amazing adventure, and tips to prepare your trip this Summer and Fall.
Wade the Virgin River through a slot canyon 1000 feet deep, sometimes only 20-30 feet wide, past waterfalls and hanging gardens. For newcomers, a leisurely day-trip starting from the "bottom-up" could be as easy as 2-8 miles; the distance is up to you. For a serious trek, obtain a permit for "top-down" and commit to 16 miles over one or two days. Either way, good planning, proper equipment, and sound judgment are essential for a safe and successful trip.
We will describe the two routes, provide a checklist of gear, share photos and answer questions. Presented by Cynthia DesGrange, devoted Zion fangirl and an organizer for VegasHikers.
