Emerging Leaders Network FAQ
What is the Emerging Leaders Network?
The Emerging Leaders Network is a funded initiative of Volunteer Victoria’s that began in May 2010, created by and for the “next generation” of nonprofit leaders. The Network offers Greater Victoria area emerging leaders and newer Executive Directors opportunities to participate in leadership-focused networking and professional development events. It also helps them connect with and learn from current nonprofit leaders.
When was the Network created?
The Network was created in May 2010 after Volunteer Victoria's proposal to an anonymous funder for this project was approved. Activities started shortly after and multiple events occur each month. We are now almost at the end of our second year of funding for this project.
Who is an “Emerging Leader”?
We see emerging leaders as generally mid 20 to mid 40-something individuals who are upwardly mobile in the nonprofit sector, including those who are already performing Executive Director roles. Individuals who have progressively-responsible work experience underneath them of at least three to five years and are looking to take on leadership positions in the nonprofit sector in the near future (or already are) are encouraged to join the Network. We expect that the majority of emerging leaders who participate in the Network will fall into the “Generation X” and “Generation Y” age ranges.
What if I’m a board member or volunteer in the nonprofit sector, not paid staff?
Individuals that have a significant volunteer connection to the sector and see themselves as an emerging leaders as described above are more than welcome to attend Network events. Individuals who wish to join the Network who do not work but volunteer in the sector should be interested in attaining board member or board chair or other leadership-type positions in the near future.
What do you mean by “leadership positions”? Does that mean I have to want to become an Executive Director someday?
A large focus of the Emerging Leaders Network will be helping emerging leaders learn about becoming an Executive Director of an organization, in order to address anticipated future vacancies in this role over the next several years. However, the Network also welcomes emerging leaders that have goals of reaching other leadership positions within the sector, e.g. manager or supervisor positions as paid staff or board chair or board member positions as volunteers. (However, many of our members already are supervisor or managers.)
Events being offered under this new network aim to highlight for younger nonprofit professionals that there are many ways to be a leader within the sector and will help them develop the skills needed to get there. Moreover, because we believe that leadership doesn't have much to do with the job title a person has, we know that many of our members are already "leaders" in their own roles, even if they are at the middle of the organization. Being an ED doesn't necessarily mean you're a leader, and being at the middle of the organization doesn't necessarily mean that you're not a leader!
We have been accepting newer Executive Directors as members since June 2010 after realizing that it was entirely appropriate for our peers who have attained the "top" leadership position in the sector to remain as members of the Network for further two-way learning and networking support within our group.
What activities are taking place under the Emerging Leaders Network?
Several learning events are offered every month, either facilitated by current Executive Directors, facilitators or other professionals in the nonprofit sector, or from our own membership. Social and networking events also take place here and there. Every effort is made to have activities that help Network members engage with and meet each other, and also meet and connect with current leaders in the sector. This online community is an additional place for emerging leaders to connect with each other and share resources, as well as sign up for Network events.
Who runs the Emerging Leaders Network?[/]
The Network is coordinated by Tara Todesco, Manager of Training & Outreach at Volunteer Victoria. She works five hours a week on ELN activities on top of her other regular duties at Volunteer Victoria.
Tara is assisted by an Advisory Group of seven ELN members who help guide the Network's direction and activities to make sure our events are meeting the needs of our members. Each year, we put out a "call" for new members for the Advisory Group, and also encourage some members of this group to stay on for a second year to assist with corporate memory for the Network and transition of new members.
For more information, please contact Tara Todesco at firstname.lastname@example.org.
