Semantic / Transatlantic ... Research, Markets and Products in Europe and the US

European Union have had put a lot of money in semantic web focused research projects on the one hand, on the other, the big IT flagships in the US are driving the commercial integration of semantic technologies into their business concepts.

So the ongoing public debate conclude, that Europe is good in research and the US are good in making business out of it. And both live in their capsuled worlds: Academic in the EC and corporate in the US. But is this true?

Let's have a closer look at this discussion with

  • Florian Kondert (COO, Head of Business Development at Semantic Web Company), who spent 3 month in Silicon Valley, to explore US semantic web market opportunities for the Semantic Web Company
  • Mike Doane (Principal at Term Management, LLC), who brings semantic web to companies like NASA, PepsiCo, Amazon, Del Monte, Microsoft, Expedia, University of Washington Medicine, Providence Health & Services, VISA, Philip Morris, Nike, The Standard Insurance, and Washington Mutual, to name a few (Mike at LinkedIn).
  • Marco Neumann is an Information Scientist and CEO of KONA a consulting and technology service company based in New York City, providing semantic technologies to businesses. In addition Marco currently acts as an Invited Expert to the W3C on the HTML 5 working group and is the director of the global semantic social network

This was both - a inspiring evening with brilliant talks (thanks to Florian, Mike and Marco) and after that a hilarious curling meetup (thanks to Marie and Rosy). For all those with and without a "Mascherl" i'd put together some video footage:
