In this talk I will introduce http://macchina.io , a new open source platform for programming Linux-based IoT gateway devices.

macchina.io provides a rich programming environment that allows to build modular applications using both JavaScript and C++. Although macchina.io itself is implemented in C++, based on the POCO C++ Libraries and a couple of other cool frameworks, it integrates the Google V8 JavaScript engine to allow high-level application development in JavaScript. After a quick overview of macchina.io, we’ll go through a live demo, followed by a few JavaScript programming examples showing how to obtain sensor data, store it in an on-device SQLite database, visualize it using the built-in web server and transmit it to a server using MQTT. I’ll also talk about the C++-to-JavaScript bridging mechanism, which enables using C++ services from JavaScript without having to manually write glue or wrapper code.

Günter Obiltschnig is a software engineer and entrepreneur from Carinthia, Austria.

In 2004, Günter started the POCO C++ Libraries open source project. He still leads the project and regularly contributes code to it. The POCO C++ Libraries are highly regarded due to their rich features, ease of use and quality of implementation and have been widely used by leading companies worldwide. In 2013, Günter started to work on what is now known as macchina.io, an open source toolkit for building IoT gateway applications. Günter's professional programming career has spanned more than 20 years. He's a hard-core C++ developer who also likes JavaScript and he has been working on the Internet of Things since way before everyone started talking about it.
