This group is a volunteer Advisory Council and Action Committee dedicated to enhancing the Upstate Foster Care program. We will focus on improving the lives of children in foster care, and providing support to the biological families.

Areas of focus will be:

1. Increase quality foster care. How do we build awareness for quality foster care in the Upstate?

In Greenville, there are 450 foster children. About a ¼ of the children stay in the foster care system for over 2 years. They become anxious and feeling abandoned. Quality care is often the primary stabilizing force. Otherwise, they “drift” and can fail in the system.

2. Focus on improved systems of care, advocate for improvements - really push something through! Fostering Great ideas is a think tank in the upstate for “improved ideas and programs for children in foster care”. Creating a business mentor model for the older kids in care – give them skills for their future – has been voiced as one improvement. Improve the quality of parent and child visits is what this meetup focuses on.

3. Work to bandage the broken home where the child comes from. Over half of the kids in foster care will go back to their family of origin.

As a general rule, children are attached to their biological parents. More than anything, children in foster care want to be reunited with their parents. You can’t change that. Let's work with the biological families to help them become better parents and provide them with support structures. In-turn, this helps to expidite the children's safe return home.

We need passionate people who are willing to commit to this venture.
