(this is an advanced discussion)

Follow along as we setup, configure, and monitor a virtual server in the cloud using Amazon’s EC2 web console tools. We’ll cover regions and availability zones, pricing options (normal/reserved/spot requests), image selection, cloud config, attaching virtual storage (ELB), network configuration (security groups), server access (ssh), and accessing basic stats (CloudWatch).

Familiarity with internet infrastructure and basic server administration recommended.

$5-$10 sliding scale donation at the door for Non WORK Members– help us keep the lights on and keep great programs coming your way! WORK Members FREE- including Friends of WORK! (http://workpetaluma.com/friends-of-work/)

Feel free to bring a bag lunch.

Barry Stump (AKA The Mayor of WORK) is lead cloud engineer for Simple.TV (http://simple.tv/), which creates DVRs that capture free-to-air broadcast HDTV, and stream live & recorded TV to all your favorite devices. When not building large scale internet platforms, he can be found tinkering with his 3D printer, dissecting the latest gadget, promoting public transportation (http://www.smartrideapp.com/) or flying a quadrocopter. He loves tea and Kickstarter with equal fervor.

Future topics along this line may include:

• scaling up (clustering, load balancing, failover)

• cloud databases (RDS, DynamoDB)

• cloud storage (S3 and EBS volumes)

• credentials/permissions management (IAM)

• non-Amazon cloud offerings (Rackspace, etc)
