Briones Regional Park, Briones Rd - 7 miles

This is my favorite Briones route. It's ~7 miles; elevation gain is ~700'. It should take 3.5 hours.  There will be sticky mud, bicycles and maybe cows and horses. So far the weather man says a high of 53ºF and 10% rain. The uphills should keep us warm though.

Route: Start at Briones Rd staging area, go up Old Briones Rd Trail to Maricich Lake for the dogs to take an optional swim, Old Briones Rd Trail/Valley/Yerba Buena/Crescent Ridge/Briones Crest/Table Top/Maricich shortcut/Old Briones Rd back to parking lot.

(please look at a map before you leave home-we will start on time)

From Hwy 4,

  • Exit on Alhambra Ave and go south.
  • Take 1st right (stoplight) on Alhambra Valley Rd.
  • At T-intersection (there's a stop sign) turn right to stay on Alhambra Valley Rd.
  • Go 0.1 miles, pass the windmill farm, and turn left on the 1st tiny road, Briones Rd.  It's easy to miss so watch for it.  There's a sign there that reads "Not A Through Street". It's a small windy uphill road that dead ends at the staging area.

Going West on Reliez Valley Rd, you will reach the T-intersection where Reliez Valley Rd turns into Alhambra Valley Rd, then go 0.1 miles, pass the windmill farm, and turn left on the 1st road, Briones Rd. Drive up to the end which is the staging area.

From Bear Creek Rd, turn right on Alhambra Valley Rd.  Go 4.7 miles and turn right on Briones Rd.  Drive up to the end and park.  You'll need to turn before the windmill and T-intersection so if you pass it, just turn around and go 0.1 miles from the intersection to Briones Rd on the left.

You went farther than we but got back close to the same time. Sorry we missed you. Zoya was with us initially but went back to be with you.

I think it was Shostro who caught up to you and then came back to me while I was waiting for Zoya.

Well, if it's your fault...guess you'll have to lead a hike as a punishment. :)

I wasn't sure which way you went at ridgetop. I went North and did Briones Crest Trail all the way to Bear Creek parking lot, then pretty straight back, 8.2 miles finished at 1:30. Sorry my doggies have sidetracked me a bit.

I was surprised that it worked with such a big group - we only lost Ed (sorry to say). It was a great party on a fine day.

Can you please tell me how much the parking fee and dog fee are?

    January 11, 2013

    • Jenny B.

      No dog fee either.

@Mariya: The trail is completely off leash except, of course, at the staging area. Also if your dog chases cows, leashing around cows is a good idea.

@Lisa G de M: Most of the park is well marked. Pick up a map at the staging area and you should have no trouble.
