Announcing a new Meetup for Walking thru the Valley of Heart's Delight & Hiking Around!

When: Saturday, July 17,[masked]:00 AM

Where: Kathleen's house
1234 Not for public notice drive
Sunnyvale, CA 94089

This Saturday, July 17th, marks the 4th anniversary of this meetup group. It began as the Santa Clara Walking Meetup Group; I joined in April of 2007 while Rosy was organizer, and soon became an assistant. Some months later Rosy stepped down, I took her place and changed the group's name. It's kinda exciting to have an anniversary roll around.

Sorry for the last-minute announcement of this multi-hour trip, but some of this just came to ?light? today! Here's the outline for an exciting event.

Start with a scenic drive, then about two hours (5 MILES?) walking the trails at the Elkhorn Slough. Bring a picnic, sun protection (although we will walk through the shaded oak trails as much as possible), water ? be prepared for warm or cool weather, but hope for cool! Bring bag lunch/snacks for the walk. $2.50 per person. Click here for info on the slough. and here for yet more.

2. FREMONT PEAK STATE PARK'S ANNUAL STAR-B-QUE! See all the glorious and exciting details on their website!
Head to Fremont Peak State Park for a STELLAR mile-long walk with fantastic views for miles and miles. See the spot where John C. Fremont planted the California flag for a few days. For the best views and a good hiking challenge, take the short but steep separate path to the peak. Free, since I have one more state park pass. [Depending on timing, we might participate in supper first, then walk the trail while waiting for dark to come to see the stars]

The organization will provide hamburgers and grilled chicken; we bring side dishes. Dr. Mark Van Stone, author of "It's Not the End of the World - What the Ancient Maya Tell us about 2012", will give a presentation about the Mayan calendar and separate fact from fiction regarding the 2012 calendar end. There?ll be a raffle, a cooking contest, trivia contest ? and best of all, SEE WONDERS OF THE NIGHT SKY! After dark you can look through the 30-inch Challenger Telescope and see stars and stuff in the sky as you have never seen them before especially if it?s clear.

ASTRONOMICAL-GASTRONOMICAL CONTEST: Bring a dish having an astronomical theme and maybe you will win a fabulous prize! Entries will be judged based on culinary ingenuity, looks and astronomical relevance! Please enter by 6:00 p.m., by placing your dish suitably labeled on the food table. Entries arriving late may be consumed without judging! A prize will be awarded.

If you have any ideas for the astronomical-gastronomical contest, let me know......maybe we could submit a group entry!

The six-person limit is for the carpool, and for RSVPs for the Star-B-Que which had to be turned in by July 12th. If you are on the Wait List, please feel free to attend either portion or all of the event, but contact the Fremont Peak Observatory Association yourself to let them know you'll be there. (Perhaps if it's too late to fit you in on the official BBQ you could skip the meat and just participate in the pot luck portion.) IF YOU PLAN ON RIDING DOWN FROM SUNNYVALE IN THE MEETUP VAN, PLEASE DO NOT RSVP UNLESS YOU ARE REALLY SURE YOU PLAN TO ATTEND. Also please plan on contributing to transportation costs.
