Loudoun clear

From: Mike
Sent on: Wednesday, July 22, 2009 4:37 PM
This Saturday, we'll scale the heights of Loudoun, near Harpers Ferry, and return (I should say so!) to visit the historic town with tasty treats before calling it a day. Loudoun Heights' often overlooked Split Rocks Overlook affords -- even during a recession -- spectacular views of the water gap. For good measure, we'll also take in the view on the other side, from Jefferson Rock, who wrote (Jefferson, not the rock), "The scene is worth a trip across the Atlantic." Come to think of it, I did cross the Atlantic to see it.
(If you haven't read what Jefferson wrote, it's worth a trip across the Internet:"
Please note that this hike is more difficult than advertised at 11 miles and with about 4500 (not 2500) feet of elevation change, or 4 (not 3.2) blisters, which puts it in the "difficult" category. However, there are ways to reduce the difficulty if you want, besides staying home.
For additional confusion, we'll try to exchange foreign phrases about the outdoors as we walk. These are things that every hiker should know how to say in other countries. (There's a wasp in the outhouse. Happy we meet in poison ivy. Etc.)  So if you know any language -- including sign, English, or Bronx -- you'll be able to sound almost as intelligent (for a few seconds) in another. As they say in France, may we!
Bring 2 to 3 quarts of water and a bag lunch. We'll meet at 8:45 am at the Grosvenor-Strathmore Metro station's open-sky Park & Ride (not Kiss & Ride) lot in back of the garage. This is the Red Line, so if you are coming by Metro, please check for delays and assume there may be some anyways.
Next week, Aug 2: ICC/Paint Branch Hike and How To Plan a Backpack Trip.
