Antietam hike this Sunday

Hello, Solemates,

This is an unplanned email (although I love it as much as my other emails). As many of you know, last Saturday was quite an adventure. First we were going to Antietam, then we weren’t, then we were, then we weren’t. We ended up not going because of the road conditions with a snow storm that turned out to be a little stronger than planned (although the meteorologists love it as much as their other storms). It was a good decision. A few intrepid soles did show up to the Metro meeting and we ended up having a nice not-so-little, and quite beautiful, unplanned hike (although I love it as much…) around Lake Frank in Rockville. Here are some pix to share: http://picasaweb.google.com/Michael.Darzi/LakeFrank#slideshow.

The Antietam Illumination was “held” after all and a description of it is at http://walkingthewestwoods.blogspot.com/2009/12/illumination.html. (My many thanks to Patrick for sending this link.) Although many of the candles went out in the snow and rain, “…Instead of despair, the volunteers felt that they had done what they came for--to honor the memories of those whose lives forever changed that day.” (Nice.) The next Illumination won’t be until next year, and hopefully we will be there to see it then.

So here is the reason for this unplanned email: In order to regain a smidgen of dignity, we are going to go back to Antietam National Battlefield, site of the bloodiest single-day battle in U.S. history, this Sunday, Dec. 13, and do a similar, afternoon, moderate (3-blister) hike of about 11 miles, albeit without Illumination. You should bring snacks and water. This will be a joint event with SCPRO & AMC-DC.

Meeting times & places are:

- For carpooling: 11:15 am at the Grosvenor-Strathmore Metro in the open part of the Park & Ride lot in back of the garage (NOT the Kiss & Ride).

- At the trailhead: 1:00 pm in the patio area at the back of the Antietam NB Visitors Center. For directions to the Vis Center, see http://www.nps.gov/anti/planyourvisit/directions.htm.

If you are interested in dinner at the historic Old South Mountain Inn at about 6 pm, you must RSVP directly to me. The reservations are limited so e-mail me soon. (Do NOT reply to the Meetup email.)  There is no dinner deposit this time because of the short time span, but I would appreciate firm commitments if you agree to go to dinner.

Right now, the weather looks pretty darn good (mostly sunny & chilly/cold), but you know those meteorologists—they don’t plan well.
