We're on the road again

It’s been 51480 minutes since we’ve last communicated and a lot of snow has come down during that time. But snow is not a problem if you know how to prepare. (By the way, I have 368 rolls of toilet paper for sale. Unused, of course, but cheap.)

1) To get going in this warming weather, we’ll start out with an easy hike this Saturday (Feb 20) and revisit the issue of road projects’ impact on local stream valleys and watersheds—in this case, the impact of the I-495 (Beltway) HOT-lanes expansion on Accotink Creek. We'll also discuss environmental restoration projects in the area. The hike is about 4 very-moderately-paced miles (0.8 blisters) over probably muddy trails (wear ankle-high boots if possible).

Since we last visited the site, a couple of news items came out:

- Interview with Kris on WAMU:

- Possible suit related to this construction:

Both items are worth checking out if you are interested in this issue.

We’ll meet at 10 am, at Americana Park, Annandale, VA. (From Little River Turnpike just west of Beltway, turn left on Pineridge Dr, then left at Accotink Pkwy, and follow to park entrance: Let me know if you would like to get a ride from a Metro station (Dunn Loring - Merrifield). Leaders are Kris Unger and me.

2) On Saturday, Feb. 27, we’ll go on the Fairfax Cross County Trail for a flat, go-at-your-own-pace hike along a pleasantly wooded path in Fairfax County, with 11- or 15-mi. options (2.2 or 3 blisters). We’ll first loop around Lake Accotink in Springfield and then do an out-and-back to either Eakin Community Park (shorter option) or Thaiss Park (longer one) in Fairfax.

This hike is part of a training series for and leading up to the One Day Hike on May 1. Leaders are Frank Wodarczyk and me. We’ll meet at 9 am at the Audrey Moore Recreation Center in Wakefield Park, 8100 Braddock Rd, Annandale. The entrance to Wakefield Park is the first right turn just west of I-495 Exit 54A, and the Recreation Center is 0.5 mile down the park road. If you need a Metro pick-up, let me know.

Beyond that, there is a lot of stuff coming down the pike, almost too much to mention, and including several Modern Major General (MMG) hikes. I’ll communicate with you in another 40319 minutes. I can’t wait!
