I hope everyone is getting a chance to enjoy this GREAT Spring weather!
Are you doing anything really important this Sunday at 3P? No? Well, I would like to ask you for a personal favor!
The DC Lithuanian American Community is going to have a short general meeting after the Mass in Georgetown this Sunday (see below for the invitation.)
I know that Danguole and Mark are going the be there (aciu labai guys!), but it would be really terrific if we get as many of our members to go as possible. If you can't make the Mass, come to the DCLAC meeting anyway!
I encourage EVERYONE
that is a part of this Meetup to drop by and participate so that we can get support and interest generated in increasing the quantity and quality of Lithuanian activities in the DC area.
The DCLAC, for better or for worse, is the face of the Lithuanian community here. As in most organizations, there is an established hierarchy, a tradition and a perspective that reflects, or should reflect, the interests of the community it represents.
I think the DLAC group has done a good job in keeping the traditions of Lithuania going here. Those members who have been active for 20, 30, 40+ years have done more than good job. But is there a NEW generation ready, willing and able to pick up the reins now? You have to be active to make a difference!
Expressing YOUR opinions and interests are important if the LAC community here is going to thrive. So, please, attend the meeting and speak out as to what is going right, going wrong, what works and what doesn't, what you enjoyed in the past and what activities will draw you in the future.
Unfortunately, I am not in DC this weekend. So, if you go, would you please let the DCLAC know that, as a Meetup, we would like to see both the traditions of Lithuania AND the modern Lithuania represented?
Lithuania has really entered the modern world. It is now an active member of the EU and faces great challenges in trade, energy, education and defense. Vilnius, the 2009 EU Capital of Culture has gotten a huge facelift (hey, Kaunas next!) The music, the culture is evolving. It would be great if the DCLAC, along with the unique resources of the Lithuanian Embassy, would actively promote the excitement of modern Lithuanian music and culture here.
I believe this Meetup is a step in the right direction. Your input, and maybe even participation in the leadership of the DCLAC, will keep the Lithuanian community here alive and vibrant!
