MongoDC Monthly Meetup - MD Edition

  • August 20, 2014 · 6:30 PM

Join us for the monthly MongoDC Meetup!

Agenda:

6:30-7:00: meet, greet, & eat

7:00-7:15: welcome, announcements, & introductions

7:15-9:00: Presentations & Discussions

One of our very own, Bob Cochran, will be presenting a MongoDB-backed application he's working on that deals with storing images.  This will very much be a two-way affair, with Bob presenting and then seeking your feedback on his work.

Do you have a topic that you'd like to present or one that you like to see covered?  Please contact the organizers and let us know!  This is a great venue for lightning talks, first time presenters, and deep technical dives.  We all want to hear from you.

This Meetup will be held at the Webs office in Silver Spring, MD.  Our office is easy to access and is very close to the Silver Spring Metro station, on the Red Line.  See "Directions to the Webs Office" for details.

Friends, I have done a few commits of my code on GitHub. If you cloned the code earlier, you might want to update it. I think I'm able to load n number of images into a collection now using fs.readFileSync instead of fs.createReadStream. ReadableStream objects do not seem to work very well for binary data. app3.js offers the ability to display just one image to the browser by supplying a new route /articles/:id where ':id' is the value of the "fn" field in the "demoimages" collection of the "images" database. My next step is to see if I can resize an image in this manner: query for the image, resize the returned image using the 'gm' module, then display the resized image on the browser. The README.md file has been heavily updated too. https://github.com/BobCochran/mongoimg.git

I would like to sincerely thank everyone who listened to my talk last night. I am taking your feedback to heart and I'll look into suggestions made by Jonathan (a guest) and I think Nick. I apologize for for my shortcomings as a speaker, and I promise to make big efforts to improve. I will put all the project materials I developed for the talk to GitHub soon (certainly by this Monday 08/25) so you can examine the code and make use of it yourself, if you want to. I'm open-sourcing it with an MIT license. I would like to give more talks at future meetups. I want to thank Michael, Caleb, and the other Webs employees for being so courteous; and I want to thank Webs and Zeki for being so fantastic about sponsoring my sign language interpreters. I also want to thank Jonathan, whose Java Immersion class I am taking just now, and another Bob, for their amazing supportiveness. My deepest thanks also to Julie and Gerard, my sign language interpreters.

Friends, I have put my code and presentation deck on GitHub. I hope this will enable you to add images of your own to your own MongoDB database. https://github.com/BobCochran/mongoimg.git There is a reasonable README file, the presentation deck is in the folder of that name. GitHub "pull requests" or opening issues on this project are very welcome. Thank you again, so very much, for listening to me last night. --Bob
