OVERVIEW:

The workshop is limited to TEN photographers and is open to all, regardless of their skill level. Beginning photographers will not “get in the way” or “inhibit” more advanced photographers with their presence. All photographers, regardless of their skill, must constantly study the same things in order to improve their images. As John says, “we are always students when it comes to our photography”.

The workshop is designed to allow participating photographers to spend as much time as possible with John photographing at various locations in the city. Lectures occur as the students work together with John and at meal breaks. There is also ample time for reviewing participants’ photographs and having one-on-one discussions with each photographer. Students will be able to observe John finding and evaluating subjects and how he is able to get in close.

By participating in this workshop you will:

˃ Improve your ability to recognize potential photographic situations;
˃ Be able to quickly analyze the elements and forms that give the subject meaning;
˃ Photograph the event at the correct moment when all elements, forms and moods have converged to a peak of visual intensity;
˃ Recognize and comprehend situations in daily life that produce pictures that communicate to the viewer what you intended;
˃ Work quickly and quietly without having to think about or look at the camera;
˃Avoid trouble in sensitive shooting situations;
˃Learn techniques to get in close without disturbing the subject;
˃ Gain an enhanced awareness of how to frame the various elements, moods and forms that make up the subject and how important proper timing is in capturing the moment;
˃ Produce photographs that entertain educate or in some way, affect the viewer for having seen them.

DATES:

DAY 1: August 31st - West End/Soho/Covent Garden/Soho Square (tbc) FULL

(or choose from 1st September or 2nd September)

DAY SCHEDULE (TBC):

10.00am. Start. Discuss the days shooting and areas, morning shoot.

The day will begin with a short introductory lecture, followed by a day shooting on the streets of London. We will concentrate on specific camera skills and the ever elusive art of "getting close". A break for lunch will also be a chance to discuss the morning's shooting experience and, if you are shooting digital, to view and critique. If you are shooting film, you will need to get a 1 hour process if you want a critique of your shots at the end of the day. If you are shooting in Black and White you will need a C41 process film. Kodak BN4000 or Ilford XP2.

*A £100 deposit is required to reserve a space, the remaining balance of £65.00 to be paid on the day (or if you are attending John's free lecture on (TBC). Cash only.

QUOTES FROM STUDENTS:

Watching John work opened up a whole new awareness of what street photography can be. Learning how to get in close without being noticed is really helpful. - S. L.

I had the time of my life working with John Free during his workshop. Anyone who is in any way serious about improving as a photographer would be wise to attend a photographic workshop with John. - D. M.

Thank you for showing me that expensive equipment is not necessary to work quickly and effectively. It is so much easier to respond to the moment now. - L. M.

    Attention Sunday Workshop Students: That friendly black dude with his Brick Lane market clothing stall has got in touch to ask if he can get a copy of any cool shots of himself taking by students. He was cool enough to allow us to get some images, the least we can do is send him his pics! If you do, please email Anthony a low res JPEG to: [masked]

    Very much looking forward to this! The only decision now is which camera to take - my 7D or Fujifilm X20? Any advice on this much appreciated. I'm thinking the X20 at the moment because it's small and discreet. Thanks.

    July 31, 2013

    • Linda W.

      Welcome Robin! re: camera wise, John Free himself shoots with a Nikon film camera and just a 50mm prime lens. Your X20 would be ideal for discretion as you say :)
