Tryout and discuss the latest wearable devices

UPDATE: Re-scheduling to Wednesday May 14, 2014

Hi Everyone - apologies for the late notice but Rob and I are flu-ridden so we need to reschedule the meetup to next Wednesday, same time, same place, same agenda.

Hope to see you all there!

Alex

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

We had a great first Wearables Canberra meetup - thanks to everyone who came along and engaged in the discussion, including Kristin Milton from Geoscience Australia who provided interesting insights into her experience of wearing Google Glass for 24 hours, both socially and in the workplace.

The next meetup is Wednesday May 14 so come along.

Ruth Ellison (@ruthellison) will be leading a discussion on smart watches and talking about her perceptions of wearing a Pebble watch, how it’s influenced her behaviour and how she sees the smart watch market evolving. From the last meet up a lot of you also had smart watches, so it would be great to get an insight into your thoughts around this too.

On the back of the massive recent announcement that Facebook has acquired Oculus VR for $2B Rob Manson (@nambor) will introduce what will no doubt be some lively (and polarised) debate about this and what impacts it will have on developers, the wearables, AR & VR communities and widespread consumer adoption of these moving forward.

We’ll also have Glass again for anyone that isn’t get a chance to try it out last meetup.

If you have a specific wearables related project you're working on and would like to present it or to share your experience using specific wearable devices you own and use in your everyday life at one of the upcoming meetups, let us know.

A big thanks to Entry29 for providing the venue too!

It was wonderful hearing about the pebble, also finding out that this isn't currently a good option for me as I am with apple at the moment.

The Meetup was interesting, and fun :)
Now all someone needs to do is somehow combine the Brainwave Cat ears with Google Glass - so users can think the menu choices (up down left right enter?) and do things that way to operate Glass ... and also have a menu/app where you can tell the ears to do things either from menu choices, or when certain other things happen (like have them wiggle when you read an email or stand up when you take a photo :)
Using a Pebble/similar as a remote for the cat ears could be fun too ... lol
... Pity I don't have any of those cool devices ... sigh ...

It was lots of fun, hearing about the pebble watch and seeing the Necomimi Brainwave Cat Ears. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JblMzmAyLW8

Hey guys, I'm not able to come either tonight... I'm so sorry as I was really looking forward to it. I will come to the next one!

Sadface. I'm out. I can feel the flu getting me. Just after I charged my watch, updated it, re-paired it, tried and dropped some stupid apps...

I was disappointed with the "Canberra Glass Meetup" at University of Canberra Inspire Centre last night. This consisted mostly of blurry live videos of sleepy people in the USA enthusing about Glass. The previous Wearables Canberra event on Glass was much better. The best part of last night was some Canberra school kids speaking on the implications of
wearable technology (and doing a better job of it than the US speakers): http://blog.highereducationwhisperer.com/2014/05/master-class-in-technology-issues-from.html

If anyone is interested, I am developing a space game for Oculus Rift and would be happy to let people try it out :)

Hi Mark - We've got a full agenda for this meetup but if you'd like to do a chat and demo of your game for the next meetup that would be great - we're looking at mid-late July - final dates TBD. Cheers,
      Alex

Thursday is forecast to be 0 to 16, which means Wednesday night will be cold. Rug up well.

Anthony, when your Google Glass runs down, you recharge it from an Energy Harvesting Backpack: http://www-personal.u...

I could do with one of those when I go out, then the phone woudn't run down quite so fast.

I can make it now, so can join Ruth in talking about experiences with the pebble - if it ever gets off the charger & back on my wrist...
