Speaker: Guy Podjarny - Performance Implications of Mobile Web Design

  • Jun 7, 2012 · 6:30 PM
  • Wayfair Offices - 4 Copley Place

Building a good mobile website, spanning different devices, platforms and contexts, is a difficult task. And also making that website FAST is even harder. Performance is often overlooked as designers and developers focus on layout and functionality, often resulting with slow and heavy mobile sites.

In this presentation we'll review the top design philosophies for building a mobile website. We'll briefly explain each, and dig into the primary performance implications it carries. We'll show real world examples, explain what they did wrong, and talk about how you can avoid these problems on your own site.

Guy Podjarny, or Guypo for short, is a web performance researcher and evangelist, constantly chasing the elusive instant web. Guy focuses heavily on mobile web performance, and regularly digs into the guts of mobile browsers. Guy is also the author of Mobitest, a free mobile measurement tool, and contributes to various open source tools. Guy was previously the co-founder and CTO of, which was recently acquired by Akamai.

Thanks Guy for introducing the current thinking on responsive web design. I hope as an industry we can work together to try to make is feasible to produce responsive web pages that work great on Mobile without punishing Desktop (which still isn't as fast as it should be).
