Why family violence is an HR issue
Details
FACT – Domestic violence will cost New Zealand employers at least $368 million over the next year.
At first glance you may not think of family violence as a workplace issue; however what happens at home can and DOES affect what happens at work.
There is now international evidence that those with a history of family violence have a more disrupted work history, are consequently on lower personal incomes, have had to change jobs more often and are employed at higher levels in casual and part-time work than those with no experience of violence.
Pair this research with statistics that say 1 in 10 males are abusive in some way within their family and we can start to see how family violence can, and probably does effect a lot more people than we think - both at home and at work.
The question therefore is… “What are workplaces to doing to ensure staff are safe at work, and to ensure that family violence isn’t negatively affecting their organisation?” As HR people we often focus on stress, resilience and wellbeing initiatives. So why not family violence?
Come along and hear about a coordinated HR response where staff can both increase their understanding of family violence, and their ability to recognise when family violence may be occurring, workplaces can create a win/win scenario where a) staff are safer at work and home, and b) the organisation can develop a safer, more efficient team culture. We’ll also hear about what one iconic NZ employer are doing to combat family violence.
