SEED TICKS - PICTURE

We've had some discusstion lately about itching on our pups after a hike. If you've never seen seed ticks, I took a picture for you.

These nasty little things are full grown in this picture. They come out in July and August, and are on every bush or weed or trail. I've had them on my own legs before, many times, and I stayed on the travelled paths. You don't have to get into the woods to pick them up. Usually, you will find tons of them on you or your dog. Humans can spray with DeepWoods Off, or something similar, but we can't spray our dogs with that because they lick their fur.

Frontline or similar products will kill them in a couple of days, but you dog is going to itch until they die. The best way to remove them is to get your fingernails into your dog's fur and just SCRATCH. They will fall off by the dozens. They will also eventually fall off naturally, after they die.

This is why we aren't hiking some of the brushy trails right now. Sissy picked these up at Castlewood on well travelled trails. My best guess is that she has 50-100 of them buried in her fur.

I have some great new trails for us to hike, but just NOT GOING THERE for another month or so, mainly because of the seed ticks. I've had a lot of experience with these mini monsters, and I try to minimize exposure. We live in Missouri, and there is nothing we can do about these tiny ticks, except stay on subdivision sidewalks.

Just wanted you guys to be aware of what these little monsters look like.
