At the Guggenheim, we will create, update, and improve Wikipedia articles covering the lives and works of Middle Eastern and North African artists and architects, countering geocultural systemic bias on Wikipedia. The event will launch MENA (Middle East and North Africa) Artists Month, an online campaign dedicated to augmenting MENA artist content on Wikipedia throughout the month of May.

On Saturday April 30, the Guggenheim will host its fourth Wikipedia edit-a-thon — or, #guggathon — with the theme 'Wikipedia Edit-a-thon at the Guggenheim: Contemporary Art of the Middle East and North Africa'.

The Guggenheim aims to further the goals of the Guggenheim UBS MAP Global Art Initiative (http://www.guggenheim.org/guggenheim-foundation/collaborations/map), and build on the model of campaigns like the Wikipedia Edit-a-thon at the Guggenheim: Women in Architecture (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Women_in_Architecture), Wikipedia Asian Month, and Art+Feminism.

New and experienced editors are welcome. The event will begin with a panel discussion at 1pm that examines art practice in the modern Middle East and North Africa, followed by a training session for participants who are new to Wikipedia. Wikipedia specialists will be on hand to provide basic instruction and editing support.
