Grand Opening: Membership Gala
Hosted by Windsor Hackforge
Details
At long last: hackf bursts into flower. On May 30, we celebrate a new summer day - we have finished the first round of bootstrap projects, allowing us to officially open the hackerspace to the public and start recruiting real official members. On May 30, we rejoice in our transition into a proper organization with proper membership, with a sure-to-be-breathtaking gala event. By calling it a "gala", I subtly suggest there will be waltzing and luxurious gowns and footmen with formal jackets. So, its is probably not the right word to use. I will use it anyway, because it makes me want to add "XY" to the end to make it "GALAXY", which makes my inner tribble purr and squeak. Also, I like thinking about waltzes and gowns and formal jackets.
BUT I DIGRESS. Here's what we're celebrating.
First, we've got a working door lock thanks to Paul Anderson, with programmable electronic access cards - meaning members can come and go as they please, without constraint or concern (beyond those imposed by the hours of the Windsor Public Library). We would like to demonstrate this newly implemented technology, and showcase some of the unique tweaks we've made to it, by beginning to sell member access cards at this event. This is the beginning of our official run as an organization - everything up to this point has been held back by lack of a true centralized funding source, and the inconvenience of trying to access a locked shop that only a few people had keys to. Member access cards are not only keys - they may be viewed as the tangible representation of full membership in the hackerspace. The monies collected from membership pledges will in turn give us the modest budget required for the next hackf project.
We don't need much to get started, as we've shown already with the LED matrix project, which we will also be showcasing on the 30th. This project was lovingly soldered and assembled by so many (frankly handsome and/or gorgeous) individuals who have shown up to help out the dynamo driving the project, Bill Fontaine. Expect it to be lit up in some way. I'm not a prophet, I'm just a reasonable man with reasonable guesses.
There's also rumours of a certain special guest making an appearance. I won't tell you their name, but lets just say it starts with "3D" and ends with "rinter". We will have some volunteers on hand to explain its inner magics, and perhaps even ensorcel us a sample or two. I've already put in a request for a cupcake made of ABS, so get in line.
Oh, and speaking of lines: did I mention there will be food? Delicious scrumptious food?
See you at the hackerspace on May 30th, at 7pm.
