In May of this year, several announcements were made that raise some intriguing ethical concerns. Kevin Campbell of the University of Manitoba, produced a quantity of hemoglobin from DNA recovered from frozen mammoth bones found in Siberia. The Neanderthal genome project, a collaboration of scientists coordinated by the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Germany and 454 Life Sciences in the United States published an initial draft of the Neanderthal genome based on the analysis of four billion base pairs of Neanderthal DNA. The study determined that some mixture of genes occurred between Neanderthals and anatomically modern humans and presented evidence that elements of their genome remain in that of non-African modern humans. Craig Venter, an American biologist and entrepreneur, most famous for his role in being one of the first to sequence the human genome, announced that he and his team have built the genome of a bacterium from scratch and incorporated it into a cell to make what they call the world's first synthetic life form. How long will it be before we have the ability to ?resurrect? extinct life forms (e.g., mammoths, sabertooth tigers, Neanderthals, dinosaurs) ? to ?create? new life forms? Should we attempt to do so? What are the potential benefits ? the risks?
