Women's Javascript Study Group

  • February 12, 2014 · 6:30 PM

Overview

We're a group of women who want to learn JavaScript together. We welcome people of all levels, but beginners are especially encouraged. You move at your own pace in this group, so it doesn't matter if you are a fast or slow learner, or if you attend every week.

We meet every Wednesday, 6:30 - 9pm. Free (non-pizza) dinner included, with gluten-free and vegetarian options.

Please be punctual - we go upstairs at 6:30pm sharp. We check the lobby once more at 6:45pm for latecomers but if you will be later than 6:45pm, please skip the group. We have to come down from the 6th floor to the lobby to get latecomers, so it's disruptive to dinner and coding to do so.

Format

Our meetings begin with yummy food catered by our host, Zoosk, and we eat with Zoosk employees (some of whom can answer JS questions!). Afterwards, we have a short discussion or a presentation on a related topic when scheduled, then all hop on our laptops and work on JavaScript tutorials and help each other when we get stuck. Most of us are using codecademy.com, but we welcome other tools. Although the focus is on JavaScript, we also cover closely related topics such as HTML and CSS.

(The only tools you need to start using JavaScript are a web browser and optionally a simple text editor or code editor.)

Venue

Thanks to Zoosk, our wonderful sponsor, for the food, space, and support.

Our entrance is to the right of the Blick Art Supply Store on Market Street, one block southwest of Powell Street BART and the Westfield Mall. If you're afraid of the dark, no worries -- we can all walk to BART/Muni together afterwards. Just go on in (or knock if it's locked), and a friendly Zoosker (Beth or Kristin) will meet you in the lobby.

PS - If you want to come but don't have a laptop, just RSVP with a note and we'll try to find one for you.

This event is exclusively open to people who identify as female.

Echoing Patricia - super great Meetup! I started this course path on Code School last night: https://www.codeschool.com/paths/javascript. I didn't want to suggest it before checking it out a bit - a lot of you seem to be further along than I am in this .js endeavor - BUT there's a groupon for 3 or 6 month discounts that might expire before I'm confident enough to recommend! http://www.groupon.com/deals/code-school-11
It's (often very cheesy) videos combined with codeacademy-esque lessons. I think there's even a git repo of all the videos somewhere that I'll try to dig up. Happy coding!

Sorry you missed us. The office where we meet is located above Blick's art supply store. The entrance is to the right side of the building.

Please wait until you get moved up to the RSVP list if other people cancel. I'm sorry but our space is limited.

  • Carol L.

HI! I'm on the waitlist, that mean that I'm not registered in the event yet?

    1 · February 9, 2014

    • Kristin B.

We have limited space so if you are the wait list please wait to see if you are moved up to the RSVP list to attend. You will automatically be moved up if enough people cancel. We usually get a number of cancellations on the day of the meetup as other commitments such as work come up for people.
