Women's Javascript Study Group

  • Apr 9, 2014 · 6:30 PM

Presentation: Aideen NasiriShargh of Zoosk will discuss his experiences and advice on getting started with JavaScript including finding a first project.

We're a group of women who want to learn JavaScript together. We welcome people of all levels, but beginners are especially encouraged. You move at your own pace in this group, so it doesn't matter if you are a fast or slow learner, or if you attend every week.

We meet every Wednesday, 6:30 - 9pm. Free (non-pizza) dinner included, with gluten-free and vegetarian options.

Please be punctual - we go upstairs at 6:30pm sharp. We check the lobby once more at 6:45pm for latecomers but if you will be later than 6:45pm, please skip the group. We have to come down from the 6th floor to the lobby to get latecomers, so it's disruptive to dinner and coding to do so.

Our meetings begin with yummy food catered by our host, Zoosk, and we eat with Zoosk employees (some of whom can answer JS questions!). Afterwards, we have a short discussion or a presentation on a related topic when scheduled, then all hop on our laptops and work on JavaScript tutorials and help each other when we get stuck. Most of us are using, but we welcome other tools. Although the focus is on JavaScript, we also cover closely related topics such as HTML and CSS.

(The only tools you need to start using JavaScript are a web browser and optionally a simple text editor or code editor.)

Thanks to Zoosk, our wonderful sponsor, for the food, space, and support.

Our entrance is to the right of the Blick Art Supply Store on Market Street, one block southwest of Powell Street BART and the Westfield Mall. If you're afraid of the dark, no worries -- we can all walk to BART/Muni together afterwards. Just go on in (or knock if it's locked), and a friendly Zoosker (Beth or Kristin) will meet you in the lobby.

PS - If you want to come but don't have a laptop, just RSVP with a note and we'll try to find one for you.

This event is exclusively open to people who identify as female.

Notes and Links from Aideen's talk:

PsycHo (Free template generator) is located at
The source can be found here:,t/am=OCMOJvn39kIx5melL6r99752lxQ7-Xhx_glPAAqwFyj_zf4fcA_gB_PHGQ/rt=h/d=1/rs=AItRSTNxTeBNVh1IZoOKCnvPP2-ytpqkzQ It is all client side so all you need to do is to extract this zip file and then open the HTML. It is licensed under GPL, which kinda means that you can do anything you want with it, but you should keep your result under GPL and share it upon request. I don't recommend anyone to learn anything from that! However any contribution is appreciated.

Phormer (The Photo Gallery Manager) in PHP (and JS, HTML, CSS) can be download from
    Again, under GPL.

In Chrome browsers, right click > Inspect Element > Network Tab > click on the funnel icon > XHR and you can see the AJAX calls to the server when you navigate or do actions, just click on those ending with .php and the JSON responses can be found under Preview tab.

2048 the game is at http://gabrielecirull...
If you are addictively into the game, one strategy to get to 2048 tile is "never use down arrow key, unless you have no other move! Just left and right, and sometimes up."
Try writing a Javascript program that plays on your behalf and makes moves every 200 milliseconds. It can start with playing randomly and then you can add some intelligence/heuristic to it. You'll be so excited watching your baby (your programs!) plays in front of you, and making right moves!

      3 More notes from Aideen:

I'll be happy to answer any question about the talk, Javascript, or relevant stuffs. You can shoot me an email to [masked] or find me in the office on Wednesday evenings.

Googling for "Javascript projects to learn" can be a good start point if you don't have any idea for now. But be Creative!

Stay passionate or leave it! Read 20 quotes about it here at LinkedIn. With *passion* you can learn anything! https://www.linkedin.c...

It looks like you just got moved up. :) (If you scroll to the bottom of the Meetup page you will see where people still on the waitlist are listed. I believe you should also receive an automatic email once you are moved up.)
