Details

In the lead up to the next round of the GNOME Outreach Program for Women (https://gnome.org/opw/) (application deadline 10/22/2014), we're hosting a series of meetups around getting involved in free and open source software development:

Open Source Software (4 of 4) Sat Oct 4th (https://www.meetup.com/Women-Who-Code-SF/events/195850922/)

This is a hands-on meetup. We've scheduled 6hrs and are providing breakfast & lunch, so you can take your time and work on whatever stage you're at:

  • learning about the tools of open source software (http://openhatch.org/missions/)
  • browsing through various open source projects
  • installing open source software to start using it
  • installing the development environment
  • downloading & building from source
  • identifying issues to work on
  • creating tests & patches
  • working on an OPW application
  • helping others do these things too!

This meetup series is for women interested in contributing to open source software, not just those who can participate in the GNOME Outreach Program for Women (https://gnome.org/opw/) paid internship (it's expected that OPW participants are able to have the internship work be a primary focus during the internship dates and spend 40 hours a week on it), Google Summer of Code (https://developers.google.com/open-source/soc/) (post-secondary students), or Google Code In (https://developers.google.com/open-source/gci/) (ages 13-17).

Are you already involved in open source software development? Are you interested in being a mentor to other women at this event? Please RSVP along with everyone else, and answer 'Yes' to the 'Would you be a mentor?' question on the WWC-OSS-Questionnaire.

When you RSVP (both attendees and mentors), please also complete this questionnaire:

...it is long, but it will help us understand who is coming, so we can recruit the right mentors & prepare.

Thank you in advance for the time you spend on it.

Finally, a BIG THANK YOU to our host, Brightroll (http://www.brightroll.com/). We couldn't have such a great all-day session without their support.
