Spinoff study group: learn Rails together

Join the mailing list at http://groups.google.com/group/wwcode-rails !

Judy and Alaina were inspired to run a Rails study group! We meet weekly on Tuesdays to do tutorials, watch screencasts, and work on projects together. Bring your laptop if you've got one!

This study session is designed to be a safe space to learn and ask questions. It is only open to people that identify as women. Emphatically queer- and trans-friendly.

Proposed itinerary:

  • 6:30-7:00pm: arrive, introductions
  • 7:00-8:20: Presentations:
    • Setting up a Staging Server on Heroku
    • Fixing a bug or adding a feature
  • 8:20-8:30: Short break. Stretch your legs, mingle a bit!
  • 8:30-9:20: Coding session. Install help, if you need it. Learn more about https://github.com/railsbridge/bridge_troll .
  • 9:20: see how far everybody's come, and decide on homework to be completed before the next meeting.
  • 9:30: Go home & get your beauty rest =)

In the past months, we've done http://rubykoans.com and have begun http://railstutorial.org .

Last week (on 1/3), we embarked on a new project: working on the RailsBridge "Bridge Troll" app! https://github.com/railsbridge/bridge_troll

Great place to ask questions, meet other programmers, and learn about different capabilities. I'm very, very new to this and everyone was very welcoming and helpful. One of the few groups that I'll make sure to attend regularly!

Abit more technical last night, however, it was because we were participating in a live editing of a site! Nice to see so many women who code and at various stages of coding expertise, at the event.

Hi Kristi! Yes, we will start you on tryruby.org and rubymonk.com -- those are all in the browser so you don't even need ruby on your system! We're also happy to help out with installation. We come from a wide variety of backgrounds -- several of us are completely new to coding, some do front-end engineering, some are java programmers. So come and ask questions -- you definitely won't be alone =D
