Women In Data Meetup
Details
"The Self in Quantified Self" - Adriana Lukas
The rising phenomenon of self-tracking, measuring aspects of one's life and ubiquity of data has attracted interesting reactions, usually by those who don't do it themselves. What is about, where is it going and what's needed for data to be a meaningful tool in individual's life? Is QS a way to increase data literacy or just another stop in turning us into data sources for those who want to learn more about us? For the last three years, as the organiser of the London QS meetup group, Adriana has been observing the movement and trying to influence the answers to those questions.
Adriana Lukas is a founder of the London QS group. She has been involved in the online technology development since 2001, evangelised social media to the UK before disowning it around 2007. She is interested in technologies that empower the individual and QS seemed to fit the bill.
"Data as an Art Material" - Julie Freeman
A vending machine that dispenses crisps in response to financial news, laser sketches from 4000 years of solar eclipse data, and a mural created from QR codes acting as cellular automata. Featuring a diverse exploration of data, Julie will showcase art commissioned and curated for the ODI's Data as Culture programme which facilitates artists to explore data as an art material. She will also talk about her own work - exposing her process of using real-time data in art.
Julie Freeman is an artist, TED senior fellow, art associate at the Open Data Institute, and PhD student researching physical representations of biological data.
