WordPress Tricks and Treats

One flash talk spot still open. Want in on this? Email [masked] for more info.

This month we're going to give you some neat tricks to improve your site and skills. Will is going to be giving an intro developer talk (some coding required!), while Jean will be sharing some content creation and business skills that he's learned at Florida Bloggers Conference this year. We've also got treats! Expect some seasonal baked goodies, as well as some other fun. Want to dress up in a fun costume? There may just be some prizes for the best ones!

9:00 - 9:30 - Networking

9:30 - 10:15 - Will Johnson - I am planning on giving a demo on how to create custom page types and how to set a custom page type as a static home page.

Altogether, I hope to give a demo that will teach some of the core concepts of theme development and display how you can use meta boxes and custom renderers to create custom pages.

10:15 - 11:30 - Networking, group discussion, flash talk

11:30 - 12:15 - Jean Perpillant - Last month I attended the Florida Bloggers Conference hosted at Full Sail University. This conference was an all day event on a Saturday and this was the third consecutive year that Bess Auer put it together. Being my first time in attendance I wasn't sure what all to expect, but I was eager to go. The sessions were plenty, about 4 to choose from each hour. They ranged from talks about social media, media kits, making money as a blogger, SEO, and more.

I think one of the better parts of this conference was that most of the speakers were all local or at least working in Florida. Not to say that they weren't hugely successful in their own rights, but to say that it was inspiring to see how humble they were and from a market that seems less tech being Florida.

Please note: There will be another race downtown on the 26th. Keep that in mind when driving over, and take Colonial to Orange to get to IDEAS, as opposed to trying to drive up North through downtown.

Thanks for the great time today. Well worth the drive from Tampa. I'll be back for more if you'll have a Tampanian as a regular. Please message me with any business or WP topic/process/discussion you'd like to hear about in a future Meetup and I'd be happy to make it happen. I'm here to serve you well.

EVERYONE ATTENDING! Don't forget your $3 minimum donation to help keep our wonderful group growing. No one profits from this donation. This is to cover the cost for room rental and refreshments.

David, is that a dollar or two above the three dollar minimum donation?

      1 · October 22, 2013

    • James T.

Hi Victor, No its not. We are asking $3 per person donation b/c so many people do not donate (1 out of 3 maybe). If everyone donated $1.50 we would have the total out of pocket cost covered. Also there is no Minimum donation. If someone cant afford the $3, they are still welcome ;c )

    Hey David !
Is the race downtown you mentioned taking place today or next Saturday? Because there was a race there this morning as well.

At this time of year, when the weather cools some, downtown hosts races and walks nearly every weekend

Hello Group, I have a question that I can't seem to find (or understand) the answer to :( I installed Wordpress SEO by YOAST and had trouble with Google reading the Sitemap and received a "General HTTP error: 404 not found. I tried to fix this by following this online tutorial
that suggest inserting the following code to fix the issue:

    # WordPress SEO - XML Sitemap Rewrite Fix
    2 <IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
    3 RewriteEngine On
    4 RewriteBase /
    5 RewriteRule ^sitemap_index\.xml$ /index.php?sitemap=1 [L]
    6 RewriteRule ^([^/]+?)-sitemap([0-9]+)?\.xml$ /index.php?sitemap=$1&sitemap_n=$2 [L]
    7 </IfModule>
8 # END WordPress SEO - XML Sitemap Rewrite Fix

Does any of this look like it may be causing the issue? I am waiting on reply from the Server Admin but if he is unable to resolve I will put it up for a freelance bid online... If this is something you can fix then please let me know and work is yours as oppose to outside freelancers. email : [masked] Thanks.

James, Thanks again for your time and help. There was a htaccess file inside the plugin and another in the root as you mentioned. Altering the wrong one was obviously producing no change. Everything's running now. Now I can have a peaceful sleep (and a job) ;) lol
