Monthly Meetup

Our monthly meetups are the first Wed of each month. WordPress users and developers of all levels are welcome. You will find a casual and friendly bunch of folks at our meetups. The focus of the meeting will be for socializing, networking, and working on specific WordPress related issues folks are having.

Our topic for this month is "WordPress Security: How WP sites are hacked, and what can be done to prevent it." presented by Andy Gagnon.

If you are interested in giving a 10-15 minute lightning talk about something, please let me know ([masked]). These talks can be about anything WordPress/web related (social media, SEO, useful plugins/themes, business practices, code practices or tools, etc.).

Enjoyed the meetup this month. Lots of topics and good information. I like learning what others are using with their sites.

Great! Despite having a presenter that was out sick we winged it and covered a variety of topics and the whole group contributed questions, resources, tips & tricks and experiences to the discussion. I took away a lot of info to explore further.

Hey all! I just implemented the 'Type' plugin (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/types/) and was pleased at how easy it was to create a custom post type (i.e. content type) with custom fields. However, I wasn't able to create a template file for the custom type using the regular "single-[type-name].php" file format. Instead I was forced to add conditionals to the existing "single.php" file to handle fields for my custom type.
Has anyone else experienced this? It's possible that the Types plugin somehow breaks the template functionality because they want you to buy their premium extension called "Views" which creates templates for you... but perhaps I'm seeing nefarious intent where there is none. Anyone have any stories to share on this? Thanks!! ~ Kevin

Thanks Andy! I'll check the 'Has Archive' setting... I believe it is turned on, so I'll try adding the archive template to see if that works. Great idea!

Ahhh...so Type tries to combine the features of Custom Post Type UI and Advanced Custom Fields. Good luck sorting it out.

I'm helping a friend who is a psychotherapist with her WP site, and I'm learning as I go. She'd like this plugin - http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/appointment-calendar/ - any comments on it? Will it be a lot of work for her to manage, once it's installed? I did find this site with lots of info about it. http://wordpress.dwbooster.com/calendars/appointment-booking-calendar

Diane, the plugin link you gave doesn't seem to bring the plugin up (just a search because it couldn't match it). I don't know anything about this plugin, but it is great when you can find a plugin with good documentation. I also recommend checking the ratings in the WordPress plugin respository (where you were). Be sure to double check how good and how many of them there are.

Thanks, Amanda. She decided to purchase a different calendar service that will just be a link from her website, so I'm relieved of researching the WP plugin.

Hi - how's everyone doing with the global brute force problem? I had only one site hacked. I was checking 404's on various sites and discovered that instead of a 404 there was a redirect to a weight-loss site on rollickingproductions.com. Took me several hours to clean it up, but it's okay now. They had added a hidden plug-in to the plug-ins folder, and changed the link to the logo image. I did an ftp reinstall of WP, deleted all of the plugins, replaced them with new, deleted the uploads folder and replaced it with a backup I had made last month. New secure passwords all around and a new wp-config just in case...
